You guys think anyone might be interested in getting together once a year, in a convenient place, like Palm Beach Florida (HAHA) to meet and illustrate technologies used, concepts, and have some vendors attend? I could probably negotiate the space and the advertising, and we could spend like a weekend away with vendors, camera manufacturers, heli accessories to share new ideas and finally put a face to everyones names? (J.O. I dont think would be invited),

Just an idea. I wish there was some way we could all meet up and spend a weekend sharing our rigs, and stories and meeting with the vendors to show them that this is a real market, and provide feedback so we ALL have better products to do our jobs...

Thoughts?

Yes..

I have talked about this with Jeff and some of the other guys out here.
Right now I have had to put it on the back burner due to my full scale training, so if somebody wants to take the ball and run with it go for it.
I also think it would be a fun event.
I was thinking less of a "show" and more of a work shop in a really nice location to give us plenty to shoot and share techniques with.

Jeff suggested Lake Powell and renting some house boats.
That sounded really cool to me.
I did some preliminary research on it and found that some deals may be had on them in the early fall like September.

sounds like a good idea. But, I wouldn't rule out inviting one of the major equipment vendors. You can't believe everything you read, especially on forums where things get a little out of hand. If vendors were invited, I wouldn't like to rule any of them out.

No vendors.

The original idea was no vendors at all.
If they wanted to come as photographers and pilots that's fine, but not just to hock their wares.

The original idea was to elevate this a bit from a "fun fly" kind of event and make it more of a workshop with some professional photographers there to give you tips on lighting, camera settings, filters, Photoshop tricks etc...
Oh yeah and to drink a bunch of your favorite "barley pop" after the sun went down.

I have not given up on the event, just cannot put the time and energy into it that I want right now.
Maybe for next summer/spring I can get it going. I may still be able to salvage a small event this fall. Depends on my progress through the full scale stuff.

ASTM conference

The ASTM conference will not be worthwhile to attend if you don't have an active interest in working on the regulations/standards.
It is basically going to be a bunch of industry folks sitting around hashing out the current draft standards and talking about the future needs/goals.
I will make sure that a full report is written on the meeting for anyone interested in reading it.

As for the "convention"....I think a fun fly event is great, but for what we do no one location is going to allow us the freedom to photograph without going out and about.
I think a meeting in a large location that is "target rich" is the best way to do it.
Then we have a central meeting point during the evenings where we can socialize and mess around. That point I think should be a field that we can test fly and do "fun fly" type events if we want to, but have the ability to go away from the field to shoot throught the event.

Like I said guys the dream is still alive and next year I will certainly organize an event, but I just have too much on my plate for this year.
