Hello all,

This thread is associated with http://www.runryder.com/helicopter/t167270p1/

I just thought post some of the results of my switch to lipos for my rx power source. I wasn't able to fly too much this weekend but the initial results are pretty promising. I will update this week as I fly more. Here's my setup....

Raptor 50 v2 OS50
3x 9252
1x 9254 (tail)
1x 9253 (throttle)
TJ Pro
GY401
TT 600m blades
Thunderpower 3s 1320 pack
koolflightsystems 35v UBEC

As you can see I'm running all digital and was sucking a 2700 ma nimh dry pretty quick! So I decided to switch to lipos, and a ubec.

First weekend flying. I'm going to post real world numbers not opinions.

I discharged and fully charged the new pack using my triton. It discharged 725 ma and took 1285 back. Yes I know the triton probably isn't the best lipo charger but it's good enough for me .

1st flight - 11.5 minutes mild 3d (tic tocs, flips, etc) - fully charged pack took 178 ma! After flight pack voltage = 12.21 v

2nd and 3rd flight - 9 min and 12.5 min mild 3d - fully charged pack took 337 ma.

4th, 5th, and 6th flight - 11.5 min, 12 min, 10.5 min mild 3d - fully charged pack took 472 ma. After flights pack voltage = 11.63 v

These are real world numbers, I'm not an electronics whiz but this seems to be working good for me. I'm thinking I should be able to get 6-7 solid flights.

I am running the same setup, works great!

Are you using a switch? I just have a deans micro plug on mine

I got mine also but I am going to use the TP1900 3S. I have not installed yet though I am debating on using a switch or just Plug & GO.

I was pretty torn on the switch also. I've had one go bad on me and in general don't trust them so I went for just plug it together. The lead from the ubec is long enough and I made an extension for the battery so I could run the wires to the outside of the canopy. I used the deans ultra plug.

OK guys, need some help here. I would like to go to a lipo pack for better voltage and longer flights between recharges. I currently use a 4-cell 2000 nimh pack in my raptor 50. I get 2 flights safely before i need to recharge due to the voltage going below 4.8 on a draw.

Now, i have seen voltage regulators and now this UBEC. Question is do they do the same job? I just want to make sure i dont fry my electronics when i slap the TP 3S pack on there. I also plan to build a 3600 Li-Ion pack for my 90 but a 2S2P pack. Can i use one of these UBEC's on it also, or should i just make a 3S pack.....i bought some loose cells. Help me out here as i am kinda confused. Thanks everyone.

Cath, the UBEC and SBEC are switching type regulators which can handle higher input voltages (35V for UBEC). Other regulators can only handle 2 cell lipos as they are linear regs.

Either kind works well with a 2 cell, the UBEC's and similar work with 2 cell or higher.

I only run a 3 cell because I have a ton of them leftover.

If you are buying a purpose built setup a 2 cell lipo is more then enough

So, if i were getting the koolflightsystems UBEC, would you get the 6v aircraft one, or the 35 volts system. I would be putting the 3S li-ion pack in it, or the 3S thunderpower 1320 pack i have here.

Cathman,

You need the 5V version. I have been running UBEC in my Electrics and they work very well. I believe Koolflight recommands the 3S packs that's what we are using. If wanted to use the 2S pack you should email him and ask him. I know some Ubec's require a certain amount of voltage to be present from the battery and a 2S maybe to small.

It says on koolflights website that 3s is recommended. 2s will work but will loose it's efficiency. You will want the 5 v because the gyro won't handle 6v. If you decide to use the regulator go with a 2s so the regulator disipates less voltage.

The main reason I went with the ubec over the regulator is that the regulators "clip" the excess voltage and vent it as heat. It get's pretty hot here in the summer and I didn't want to worry about overheating the regulator.

Great, thanks guys. I will be going with the 5v one and a 3S TP 1320 pack i think. Its little bitty but can put out the power. Thanks again.

Yah the 1320 is small but at least 6-7 flights!! Plus I know people say you can't quick charge lipo but I've been thinking about that. If you watch how your charger does lipos is seems like it puts in 70% of the charge in the first half of the charge. And because lipos don't have memory like nicds/nimhs it wouldn't hurt the packs to throw them on the charger after a couple flights for 20 mins. The only problem I see with that is you might start loosing track of how many flights you have left.

Ok, i am ignorant to the UBEC. I see two sets of deans plugs on there. Is one set plugged in all the time and the other the on/off switch so to speak? I would like to get one tomorrow....anyone got a good site that sells them and ships fast??

I spliced one set of deans on the battery and ubec. But because I'm not running a switch I made an extension for the battery so I could plug/unplug without taking the canopy off. I purchased mine from fxaeromodels.com and they were very quick (3 days) for $30.

I know I'm resurrecting a old post but thought I would add some more numbers.

Went flying today...

6 flights (11.5 min, 11 min, 10.5 min, 10 min, 8 min, 12 min)
all flights doing mild 3D (all I'm capable of ) with lots of auto practice.

Pack was fully charged using the triton at beginning of day.

Just got home and put it on the charger it took 785 ma!!

Thats 130.8 ma per flight. Not sure why less ma 's this time except for maybe I was doing a lot of autos and they don't use as much servo power. I'm still trying to find a mult-meter to put a load on the setup and see if I'm getting any voltage drop, but it flys great!

my 7.4 2 cell lipo works good too. 3270 kokam with UBEC 5.0 volt. 3 9252, 1 9254, 601/9251 and TJ on a raptor 50. Mild 3-D every flight. About 8 or 9 real flights on a charge. My transmitter goes dead before my heli LOL.

LOWER LOWER DOH!!!

I'm going to try this setup, I've got the UBEC coming in the mail and I'll be using 850 mah 3S lipo's. My calculations show that I should be saving 2 ounces compared to a 4 cell 1700 nicad pack, which should just about get rid of the nose-heavy condition on my R50 while still being good for 4 or 5 flights. Next weekend we'll see!

I got a fever! The only prescription is MORE 6HV

Switching regulators, like the UBEC, are very efficient (that’s why they don’t get hot) but should really be used with 3S LiPo or more. Since you have more voltage at the battery the battery current draw will be much less than the output current to the receiver. I have been running one with all digital servos for over a year and it never gets warm and the battery draw is very low. The UBEC is definitely a bid improvement over all those other regulators.

I have also tried the SBEC but I like the UBEC much better. The SBEC seams to bog down a little with 5 digital servos.
