I have an evo 50 w/401+9253. In a tail-in hover, the tail will sometimes go to the right with no input. It works fine about 95% of the time, but once in a while the heli will turn counter-clockwise. Sometimes it stops at about 45* and sometimes it will do a complete 360* spin, always the same direction.

The guy who has been teaching me to fly has tried many different things and nothing has helped. He has had the gain from the mid 40's to about 85 and that didn't help.

I have flown this guys helis several times with no problem at all. I can fly around fine and he even has me hovering inverted (very high, of course), and some loops and flips. I've tried flying my heli two times, both of which I had tail problems. The first time, the tail started spinning. I had to hit the TH and practice my first auto. The second time, the tail piro'd a couple of times and I lost control. The heli ended up about a 1/2 mile away. I was lucky enough to get it back to us and had to give the tx to my instructor to land it because I was so rattled. I don't know if these two problems have anything to do with the problem I'm having now.

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated. I need to get this fixed. I have order a new gyro/servo set, but don't want to use it until I've tried everything there is to try.

If it isn't vibration, I would try another gyro and see if the problem stays with the heli.

Check your servo connections, you might have a loose connection.

Since you've already ordered a new gyro/servo set, I would recommend that you install the new set. Remember to mount the gyro with some proper tape (not the futaba crap).

Then send the old set back for repair. It might be the servo that is defective, but I would suspect the gyro.

Only other thing would be to check your belt. It should be tight enough so that it doesn't slip, but loose enough that you can push one side of the belt almost to the center-line between the front of the boom and the front tail pulley. If the belt has been slipping, you might want to remove the tail and check the entire belt and both pulleys for missing teeth.

what *might* be happening is that the servo is getting fuel soaked
(since it's hanging off the back and you're just learning to fly) and
it's slowly starting to 'stick' and die.

Either way, you should send the servo and gyro in for a checkup.

I charge the battery after every flight. I've been checking it and the lowest voltage I've got is about 5.1 or 5.2 volts.

why do you bother charging after every flight and carrying the weight
penalty of a subC setup.

thats a lose-lose

My starting voltage after a flight is about 5.9 volts. Since it drops to 5.1-5.2 volts after a flight, I don't feel safe trying to squeeze in another flight before the batt goes below 4.8. I've seen one go hard-in because the 401 reinitialized in flight. I don't want that to happen to me if I can help it. The people I am around have had the best luck with the sub-c packs.
