TOKYO -- Toshiba Corporation today announced a breakthrough in lithium-ion batteries that makes long recharge times a thing of the past. The company's new battery can recharge 80% of a battery's energy capacity in only one minute, approximately 60 times faster than the typical lithium-ion batteries in wide use today, and combines this fast recharge time with performance-boosting improvements in energy density.

Thats crazy! You would need a charger capable of pumping 36 amps into that little sucker!

Still, if it performs half as well as the claims, it would be an amazing advance in battry technology. I particulary like the lifespan. Currently, this is where existing lipo techonolgy falls down, especially if you are in the habit of storing your Lipos fully charged at room temperature, where you can lose 20% of capacilty within a year!

dont think so... its the second time and second company to announce such technology. Both were Asian companies so i wouldnt be surprised if this is real and coming at some point however, as mentioned its going to take one hell of a charger to deliver the amps needed to charge at that rate. who knows... guess we will see

those are some crazy looking graphs.

looks like BS when you look at the colors and the whole look of them. Looks like Toshiba's grandson's 6th grade math homework.

anyways, as soon as these cells are cheap imagine all the 50+mph personal scooters flying around the streets.

This new technology is not BS but true. I have read about it in other sources as well. How awesome!

For example here: http://www.evworld.com/view.cfm?sec...que&newsid=7681

If that is true, the nitro heli future could be on thin ice

Hear, hear. I now only fly electric fixed wing plus the T-Rex, only giving in to the dark side with a Raptor 50 . Motors are getting cheaper, ESC's are getting cheaper there's just lipo's to go. With the improvement in battery technology plus the need for a replacement for the cordless powertool market now nicads are on the way out, our batteries should only get cheaper & better as we are probably the only sector of the market pushing our batteries so hard.

Unfortunately it will take some time to persuade our slimer fliers that electric is a better option

Currently I fly brushless/lipo Eolo and a Nitro Freya and obviously I have a preference for the Freya on performance and size, although the Eolo is great too. But if we could get a similar machine with right performance, price and recharge ease I would seriously go all electric, except of course for my desire to own a large scale turbine just for the noise, smell etc.

I think we can make an exception for turbines
