Second flight of the day, lift off into hover and the tail is wagging. Not sure what it is so tried to adjust the needle a few clicks. Lift off again, tail wags even more. My friend pointed out it may be the gyro coming loose. Sure enough, we discover that the gyro has come completely undone and is hanging by a last 1/16th thread of the tape when I lifted it. The futaba gyro tape absolutely sucks! It came apart down the middle layer and the heli has less than 3 gallons on it. The flight before I was hovering it inverted. It is by some pure chance that it came completely undone when it did so the heli is in one piece! On the brighter side, I tried the green "jell tape" which made a big difference in a more "locked in" tail with the GY401. Check your futaba tape often, better yet, don't use it at all, cause you never know when it will go!

I always secure my gyros with some sort of secondary (just in case) attachement. The little velco like straps you buy at Homey Depot work just fine. The Gyro tape, while better than ordinary double sided foam tape, will deteriorate after a while. Lose the tape and lose the heli. I don't trust my investment to a piece of tape.

If you look in my gallery you can see what I'm talking about on the EVO.

What is green jell tape ? That sounds like it could be really good against vibration.

I think it's green made of some sort of gel and of course, sticky, you know like tape.

You Know,

I never had a real problem with the Futaba Gyro Tape, I replace it at regular intervals (about 10 gallons or so) and I have velcro on top of it. I try not to put all my eggs in one basket........

I think a lot has to do with where the gyro is. If it's hanging out the back like on my Evo and getting sprayed with smoke and oil residue, then it's only a matter of time before it fails. Underneath the canopy it would probably last much longer.

Same here. I have my 401 mounted under the canopy on my Evo. Out on the back it gets covered with Oil. Another thing is my tail servo. That thing takes a bath in oil every flight!

Won't the velcro as used in the pictures above transfer vibrations to the Gyro thereby negating the idea of using foam tape?

I supose it could it it were pulled really tight. The velcro i use is just snug. Not too tight. Flys the same with or without it.
