I'm working through setting up my Raven and Im thinking I may have to change a setup on the rotor.

In the book, it says to install the ball link on the right side of the grip for the tail rotor. I've done this. Now, if I take the blades and turn them in the grips so I can better see their angle, I have more "throw" to move the tail to the right than the left. This seems backwards to me. If I move the balls to the center I'd increase the throw so that I'd have more authority to move the tail to the left - doesn't that counteract torque?

Item 2 - On my Hawk with regular rate gyro (no HH), the tail blades are pretty well at neutral pitch when the Heli is just idling (blades barely or not turning). I've then dialed in 20% revo mixing so that when I get to a hover it is steady and when I apply a quick "up", it doesn't rotate. This works fine BUT, on the Raven with a 401HH, should I have 10% bite built into the tail at idle?

Thanks

Don,

With the 401, and all heading hold gyros that I know of, do not use ANY rev mix. Yes, set the tail rotor for the "bite" that you talk of, pitch that will counteract the torque of the main rotor, or pitch that will want to pull the boom to the Left as viewed from the rear.

On the ball location in the tail rotor blade grips, yes set them so you get more Right pitch (moves the tail to the Left as viewed from the rear). That's the way I set mine up and like it.

Steve, which hole do you have the ball in, the one closest to the tail, the middle or the one furthest from the tail. It seems to me that to get maximum left tail movement you've want the ball in the hole furthest from the tail.

And yup, with Heading Hold I take out all Rotor Mixing. I didn't at the start and confused the gyro when I used the left stick. Then remembered that there should be any mixing.

Final piece of the puzzle before I'm ready to fly the Raven is tail control. The Rods sent with it just don't fit. If I had a 2mm die I could cut the rod and cut new threads and I'd be OK but I can't find a 2mm die anywhere. I think Century is sending out a replacement and I've asked them to send me the CF rod.

Question on the CF rod. Apparently you have to cut it. Do you know if after cutting it is still adjustable somehow or is it "I've got one chance and better do it right". Because, I won't really be able to figure out the length till I fly it.

Thanks;

Don,

I use the middle holes on my Raven and it works good.

Since my Raven was originally a Falcon, I've never used the stock Raven tail rotor push rod. Mine is a custom thing I pieced together from a C/F pushrod I got at the LHS.

I do know the Century cabon fiber tail rotor pushrods come with aluminum end pieces that are glued onto the carbon fiber tube. The aluminum pieces are threaded inside and accept the provided threaded rod that the links also screw on to. Bothe ends are adjustable, but you do have to cut the carbon fiber "in the ballpark". What I do is install one end before I cut and that way you can judge accurately enough using the other pieces as a guide.
