In the manual it shows putting the servo on with the gears towards the front of the heli with a z-bend put into the servo horn. Two questions... Can you put the servo the other direction? Shortening the distance of the pushrod? Also... Can you use a linkage ball for the rudder servo just like all the other one? Is there any reason you wouldn't?

You can do anything you want as far as the tail servo is concerned but it's best to build it stock first. Just drill the hole in the servo just big enough so you can make the 90 degree turn on to the Z bend on the rod.
