A few weeks back I was flying my Voyager E for the first time. I was practicing my hovering and had a few moderately hard landings. The tail rotor blades got a few little dings, but everything looked OK, until I brought it to a hover for the seventh time. After hovering for about 20 seconds at about 15 feet up the tail assembly exploded, and I had to make an emergency landing. The only parts at the end of the tail that seemed to be in fine shape were the two tail blade holders, the drive belt, the tail shaft bearings, and the plastic end that caps the boom. I had to replace all the other parts in the end of the boom. The rest of the heli was undamaged.

After waiting for three weeks for the replacement parts, I was able to give the heli another go today. Unfortunately, the heli spins quite aggressively in a counter-clockwise direction as it leaves the ground. Before each attempt, I was very careful not to have any tail trim set, or to apply any tail controls until the gyro light became solid. I tried centering the tail as per the direction that came with the Futuba GY401 gyro that is in the heli. They said to start the gyro in "head holding" mode and then switch to "normal" mode and adjust the trim settings. In both the "normal" and "head holding" modes the tail rotor blades looked right on the mark. Regardless of what I did with the trim in "normal" mode, the heli would spin counter-clockwise. I even maxed out the trim for clockwise movement, before attempting to take-off. No luck! (During several trials in "normal" mode I saw the tail blades strongly angled to produce a "clockwise" spin before starting, but the heli would still turn in a counter-clockwise direction as it left the ground.)

The heli is running a Hacker motor, so I had to create a gyro platform in the back of the heli to avoid interference with the gyro. This arrangement worked like a champ before the tail blew-up... The gyro is mounted straight and level.

There is no one that flies helis here, and I'm a real novice. Any help would be appreciated.

Ken,

Make sure you haven't accidentally moved the reversing switch on the gyro to the wrong position.

A couple of things come to mind...

First, check that you have the blades mounted correctly in the grips. The control arm on the grips should be at the leading edge of the TR blade NOT the trailing edge. I did that the first time I reassembled the TR and the result was just what you are seeing.

Second, check that the TR itself is turning in the proper direction. This may sound pretty basic, but most of us have at one time or another gotten the belt twist reversed and had to correct it. remember that the TR blade should be moving upward at the front of the assembly and down at the rear (counter-clockwise when viewed from the right side).

These both assume that you made no changes to your gyro switches or any changes to the radio functions for the tail.

Give those a try, but my money is on the first one .

Dean and Ralph thanks for your quick reply

I won't have a chance to check everything that you recommended for a day or two, but I will keep you up-to-date. THANKS!

Same thing!!!

I had the same experience. I replaced the blades, but put the holder on backwards. Once corrected, all was ok...... I used this post to fix my problem.... Thanks to all!!!
