I'm not at all satisfied with the routing of the tail rotor push rod on my Venture 30 (my first heli). The angle that it must negotiate makes it impossible to get a low-drag run through the tail boom standoffs. I'm contemplating putting a pair of shallow bends in the rod aft of the frame so I can get a straight run through the standoffs. However, I'm afraid that this might introduce some lengthwise flex. Is that a valid concern? How can I best get a low-drag operation for this push rod?

I would not put any bends in the tail rod this would end up making the tail rod too short. I would check the guides that the tail rod passes thru for plastic flash which can cause drag on the rod.
The tail can be set up with almost no drag with a little bit of time and patience.

I don't think there's any flash. I just think that it's because the push rod can't run perfectly parallel to the tail boom and the fact that the holes in the standoffs _are_ parallel. I've also contemplated very, very slightly enlarging the holes in the standoffs.

You could open them slightly I have found some to be tight at times and just running an exacto knife around each end will improve them sometimes.

that will help

just line them up for the free-est movement
and fly they will work in

one other option is sand the inside of the rings so they slide
on the boom IE not a tight fit
and hold them in place by a few wraps of electrical tape
this allows some play for a smoother movement

I suggest you just buy a servo attachment for the tail boom. I modified mines so I have a quick response on the tail rotor. It works very well...All you just have to do is cut the rod and make sure you have a servo extension re: JR

Once I got the best alignment I could, I put a small amount of clover compound (valve grinding compound) ... Very fine ... on the rod at each guide. Ran it back and forth (free at both ends) to polish the guides. Took the rod out and cleaned it thoroughly (Also the guides) ... Works like a champ. I did the same on my Venture 50 and Voyager E.

MD900, I considered that--even bought the tail mount and a carbon push rod. However, I was dissuaded by concerns about the eventual effects of exhaust on the servo.

DeanM, thanks for the clover compound suggestion. I'm going to do the X-acto knife "reaming" and then follow it up with your technique. Much appreciated.

When the stand offs are lined up, it works very well.
