Use a taxi, it's better and you can split the cost betweeb the 3 couples. By all means do not use the public buses as they are the slowest on the whole country. One idea would be to take the subway out to Brooklyn and then hopping on a taxi. This way you would save money.

Driving in NYC is quite scary as well if your not used to it. Cab Drivers, and others, will be cutting you off like there's no tommorrow.
ShempHoward it's obvious you haven't come in Athens. Trust me if you can drive in Athens you can drive anywhere in the world even in India

Seriously now the info about the parking is very serious so this is a good reason not to rent a car. Thanks

Sealerman,
I second the "Stop Scaring the tourists". What does a "Long Gislander "know about "The City" anyway. Just what they "THINK". NY is like any other city,go into the wrong area and you can get in trouble. Not any worse than anywhere else.

I have no first hand knowledge of what driving in Athens is like but I have heard some second and third hand horror stories about it. Your comments seem to be inline with what I have heard. I have drivin in London and Tokyo aside from virtually all the crowded major US cities but I feel that NYC is one of the all time worst places to drive in. Its just a matter of being too crowded with too many cars and drivers with a "me first" atitude in NYC. I found both London and Tokyo very crowded but the drivers were curteous and seem to follow the rules of the road without the "me first" atitude.

Only a New Yorker can Tell You
I work in Nyc - Do not rent a car. You will not have a pleasant experience. Renting a car and driving in NYC is such a big hassel. Parking is a non-event. You will never, never find parking unless its in a garage. Walking in most situations is actually faster. I should know. If I were to walk from my Job on 51st street to the United Nations Building where my parents work, I could get there on foot faster than a Taxi. Why - Traffic. There are plenty of cabs ready at amoments notice to take you anywhere.
New York is the most amazing city and you will love it. Even veteran New Yorkers are amazed at our dazzling city. See a broadway show, visit time square. Trust me - You will love New York.

Yes, there are flying fields in New York - Mainly in LongIsland, Brooklyn, Queens, etc.. everywhere.

Hey, this sounds just like Vienna! Really, I've been driving in many large and chaotic cities, including Marrakech. It may be a bit scary at first but it's really no problem - not so much because drivers are following rules but because they use common sense of which I cannot find even a single grain in the streets of Vienna.

Linley, to my knowledge there are NO flying sites in Queens. There are parks where people fly illegally like I do but I don't think there are "flying sites". Please correct me if I'm wrong because i'd like to know.

Jerry apart of the traffic conditions you like Athens?

OK guys you convinced me I will not rent a car. Only for one day and this is for going out of NYC just to see the sourounding areas.
New York is the most amazing city and you will love it
I am sure about that. I am already so excited. I was dreaming this trip all my life and I am going to enjoy it as much as I can. What I am afraid is that at the end I would like to stay there
I have an appointment next Thursday in the embassy for the visa.

About driving in London I have been there and I have drive there. I was in London for almost a year doing my master. How these people can drive in the oposite side of the road. One year there I never managed to get use the way they are driving. Even when I was walking and wanted to cross the street I was always looking on the wrong side

ShempHoward my friend allow me to give a general idea about the driving conditions of Athens. Just imagine the traffic of NYC and Cairo together, the flow of the cars in London and Tokyo now add the "me first" attitude and you have the idea

How bad can Athens traffic be when you have the smell of a good Mousaka in the air?
