I have exactaly the same problem spooling up the blades on my Maxi-Joker.
My set up is:
Maxi-Joker
800mm mains
24-5 actro motor
shultz 32.55k
30 cell NiMh 3Ah
Every time I try to start the motor it will do exactly what Dakine discribed (eg will start to spin and cut of after about 2 seconds). But after about 10 to 15 attempts it will start and work fine. Intresting though is if I land than turn of the motor and then in the same flight spool it up again it will usually start at the first time.
My gess is that after the battery lost some of it very hight initial voltage the voltage drop at spool up will be smaller and the controller wont think that the battery is empty.
Allso I think that the shultz controllers don't like the actro 24-5 motor very much on spool ups (may-be it draws to much curent and cose the voltage to drop allot). The huge blads of the Maxi (800mm) allso take allot of power to get the enitial momentum and thus load up the motor and the system considerbly more then 700mm blads. This of course dosn't help for the controller in the spool up prosidure.
Finely I think that if you have a Maxi-Joker with shultz controller and actro 24-5 motor you shuld expact some problems spooling up but eventualy it will work. And after it will start it will work nicely.
Eran.

Have a nice day :)

Eran,

I agree with you (everything).

I just couldn't risk not being able to spool up at a shoot.

There's one thing I didn't try. That is trying the 710 blades or shorter with the Schulze 40.160 with the 24-5 motor. My guess would be, I would have higher spool up success rate with shorter blades.

It was a combo of things which affected the spool up issue: 24-5, 20 tooth pinion, 810mm blades, 40.160 Schulze. Until you have the exact setup, you would not experience the spool up issue over two days of trying. Again, I did it it spooled up once over two days of trying. When it did spool up, it was a monster....increasing the head speed to 1550. I had not seen this in a Maxi with 810 mains.

But, I am now much happier with the 40.160 and 24-4 combo.

Thanks.

Well, it happened to me. I was using a 32.55 in my CX for six months. Not a single problem. Converted to a Maxi so I could take pix, dropped a 24-5 in, nothing. Turns for a fews seconds and then shuts down. Works great without the blades. I flew a 32-4 in my CX with the exact same controller (23 tooth pinion). No problems there either. This sucks. I guess I'll order me up a Jazz.

BTW the 32-4 doesn't spool up either with the 20 tooth. It also spins great without the blades.

md11plt,

Yep, I too was frustrated after spending $600. Take off the blades and it would spool up. Put on the blades and it won't. I've even tried spinning the blades by hand before spool up and it still woudn't work.

So, my solution was, I got rid of the 24-5 and dropped in a 24-4 with a 20 T. I also had to go with shorter mains due to the high head speed. My Maxi head speed now is 1850+

But, I'm comfortable with the set up now as a cam ship so the high head speed is not a problem for me. It doesn't bog as much as the 24-5 when you punch it, even with the camera gear on. It is stable but will rock n roll when you want
