Hello all, as the title indicates, Im looking for some help in getting started in this field. After looking around at a few sites, this forum seems dedicated to the helicopter I want to fly, and it is filled with very smart folks.

I have over a year of experience on a nitro Hirobo Shuttle Challenge. Built it on my own, and learned to fly it on my own, so have some experience.

When it comes to Electrics I'm clueless. So Ive compiled a list of what I think are going to be my best bets in getting me started. My question is, how do you think this list should read and why? Not all the slots have been filled in by me as you can see. I simply dont know what would be the best thing to use. I also like to use my brain instead of my wallet, so inexpensive items that function properly dont bother me. Also if theres something that you think should be on this list and isnt, let me know

Things to keep in mind: I have a Futaba 9CHP TX, and Futaba 401 Gyro

Helicopter: Shogun 400
ESC: Castle Creations Phoenix 25
Motor: HIMAX 2025-4200 - 4200 KV motor
Battery Pack: Tanic LiPo 2500mah/11.1v
Battery Charger:
C/A/P Servos:
Tail Servo:
Receiver (72mhz ch25):
Electric Plugs Male: Deans male Ultra Plugs
Electric Plugs Female: Deans female Ultra Plugs

Thanks in advance! I look forward to your Replies!

Hi evscott33

I would recomend a smaller battery for starters, anything between 1200 mAh and 1800 mAh. The 2500 is a bit big for the zoom 400. Make sure that the C rating (maximum discharge rating) is high enough. Whatever you do, get a good charger for Lipo`s. Call it a long term investment. I use the Jamara X-Peak 3. Its a German make and its great.

I use GWS Pico STD servos all round. I have heard that the GWS servos are power hogs though. I will put an external BEC on my zoom soon to prevent any problems. There are lots of suggestions in other forums regarding the servos. Many people use Hitechs.

You will need to make ( or buy ) a tail boom mount for your GY401 gyro. I keep the tail servo up front for a better weight distribution.

For the Himaxx motor you will need the correct pinion ( I think a 9 tooth for the 2025-4200 ? Check that first !). I use a Hacker motor with a 9 tooth pinion.

You should get the PC link cable for the Phoenix 25 ESC, it will make programing the ESC a pleasure. The standard method is a bit long and boring especialy when trying different setups.

You should get the hardened main rotor shaft as the stock one bends if you look at it too hard

The rest looks great and should fly well.

Here is a link for some DIY bit you might want to look at :

Have fun, its a great Heli

Evscott, i agree with Nyala you will need a smaller battery. As for a charger the Triton is a good charger that will do basically anything. The phoenix 25 is a good choice, I have run the Himaxx 2025-4200 and found it to run hot. I am now using the Axi 2208/20 which has lots of power and runs cool. The servos i am running the Futaba 3107 on cyclics although some like the Hitec HS-56, the tail servo is a Hitec Hs-50. I was using the 9c when i got my zoom and was using a Berg 5 receiver. If you plan on running the stock tail drive look into some of the guys making better tail gears as they strip out alot.
