Hi all, I crashed my Rap 30 V-1 this morning. Didn't do major damage but got to thinking about building a V-2 and transfering my OS32 and radio gear to it. I bought my V-1 used so haven't had the opportunity to build up my own heli yet and this might be a good way to start. Anyway, my question is what kind of performance improvements I could expect if I go to the V-2 with the same engine and radio gear? The V-1 has about 160 flights on it.

Tnx for any input. Jim

P.S. I really enjoyed checking out you guys gallerys.

OH NO!!!! Not the dreaded "Do a search"!! I'm so embarassed!

Actually, I did a search but didn't really come up with the flying comparison info I was looking for. Lots of info about "go to a 50 you won't regret it" and such. I did come up with the fact that it's not really worth the money to convert my V-1 to a V-2 which is useful. I wonder how long I should keep searching before it's acceptable to try and get some fresh info?

Best Regards, Jim

It will fly the same as your V1. Things were changed to help longevity. The tail rotor may grow a few millimeters due to the 60 size blade grips but I'm not positive. The basic difference in V1 to V2 is a better main rotor head, much better tail rotor assembly, new frames with a better clutch. You may have heard of people having a V1.5 or something because they upgraded the head and tail rotor but did not do the clutch yet. The V2 upgrade kit is around $95.00. Hope this helps.

Jim,

I have a Raptor 50 V1.5 with the metal collective arm, V2 head and some minor bits and pieces. My take is, when you blow the machine up, that's when I would consider changing it to a V2. If it's working why mess with success?

This subject has been discussed many, many times and doing a search will reveal it if you know what to search for but most people don't know the correct keywords. Not too worry, quite simply if you don't know ask, that's what the forum is for, so what's the problem?

The head on the V2 is much tighter although you can glue the bearings in the V1 grips and put a shim between the head and grip to take out most of the play. It's worth upgrading the head if you have a good crash and destroy most of the V1 one

The tail is a good upgrade although you can put the raptor 60 hub, and blade grips on, costs peanuts and saves you the problem of throwing a tail blade because of the crappy hub.

Fuel tanks slightly bigger, always a plus point and the clutch, cluth bell, start shaft, frames and start shaft bearing are different. Not worth bothering with that bit IMO.

Hope that helps

Tnx's guys for the informative responses. Based on your input I did some more research and found a source for the V.1 to V.2 upgrade kit ($95 as stated). I think that's the way I'll go since my head was broke up. Also, my heli has about 160 flights on it so a new swashplate will probably be in order. I'll do the tail changes while I'm at it. I already have a crash kit on hand so that will take care of those things. That will leave me a new clutch, etc. should mine give out. Also a spare frame set. I'm still always amazed at how rugged these things are. Tnx again for the help.

Jim, run the V1 frames until you crash them out. Then upgrade to the V2 frames and clutch/start shaft. No real flying difference.

V1 was last year, V2 is this year, V3 is next year, V4 is a year following next year........... Well, you get the idea... (excuse me, I can't help, but write this un-irrelevant post... It's raining, that's why )

You won't go wrong either way. I fly a v2 but my flying buddy (helicopter john) flies 2 v1s and has a ball with them. He does things with the v1 that defy anyone saying they do not perform as well as the v2s. Just decide on what makes sense for you and do it. I loved my v1 when I had it. If you like the 30 size (and there are definite pluses for that as well) I have heard lots of good things about the OS37.

The main thing is run them slightly rich (esp. on the bottom) and fly them slightly this side of YOUR edgeof the envelope- they will last and last and last and last....you get the idea

Have fun before you do anything else with them!

Enjoy!
