Absolutely, the inverse-square law. I don't know how to do pie here so say 3.14. For sound, Power / (4 x 3.14 x r2) = Intensity.

But you have to remember the way db's work. Db's are logarithmic. 1(db)=10log10[I/I0]. For example, 40db is 10,000 times 1db.

To do some math, if you have 1kw of power, at 1 meter that would equal ~139db. At 2 meters that drops to 132db. At 100 meters, 99db. For 240db, first of all, it would take an unbelievable 13,000,000,000 watts to create that kind of energy at ONE METER. At 100 meters, it would still be 200db. At one mile, 176db. At two miles, 169db. At TEN MILES it's still 156db! You have to remember too though, this is for a "dead" environment without reflections. In a "live" environment, the results would be even higher. And, remember too that in water, or air, sound can't propagate in a sphere because of the ground. The reflections from the ground (ocean floor, whatever) add back to the total.

Seriously! If you don't believe me, Google up sound, and the inverse-square law.

Ah mr. s-owen
interesting reading from the same types of people that I want at the bottom of the ocean.
what about
:quote" HISTORY: In the early 1980's, the U.S. Navy identified a new generation of silent submarines as a national security threat"

This seemed to be the best way to keep track of this type of sub.

And you fly copters ,dont you notice certain insects are attracted to the frequency of the rotor blades ? But yet you continue to fly !
How do you know that the Bug that went splat on your blades wasnt the last of it species never to be seen again .

What gives you the right ?

WTF man? That's a s***y thing to say.

FIRST of all, I AM NOT some environmental tree-hugger nut job. I eat red meat, drive a V8, leave the lights on, don't recycle, blah blah blah. I AM NOT the type wearing the green peace shirt chanting at the captiol. However, I don't wear my ignorance one my sleeve either.

I am NOT saying we should abandon any system that keeps this country safe. I am saying that we need something better. Your mouse trap may catch mice, but if it kills every single thing in a 50' radius, make one that doesn't . If LFAS is what we have, fine, use it. Just don't settle for it.

I would rather see every whale in the ocean dead than one stinking nuke from some terroist sub that managed to get close enough to light it off because the left wingerers got our defenses shut down ..Well maybe if all the left wingers and their lawyers were in the same spot and that was where the nuke went off ,hmmmmmm

You bring up a very interesting point. Drug smugglers have attempted to bring drugs into this country via submarines. (Do a google search on this). I assume that instead of being met by the Coast Guard, they had the US Navy instead I guess they haven't heard of the network of sonar bouys along our coastline

I doubt these have been big subs capable of carrying nuclear weapons, probabaly just small diesel powered ones.

S_owen,
OOPs did I hit a button
Sarcasim just a service I provide But when every group you show a link to , looks just like the depleted urainium banning groups that someone was linking last month .
I hate those people .If they are so smart , they should come up with a better system.
Yeah its a bad thing but on the other hand ,so is a sub in san francisco bay.

Like those earth first ads say what would you choose between clean air and clean water?

What would I choose between whales and the saftey of my family ?

Hopefully they come up with technology that doesn't bounce real loud sounds .
But until then its what we got.

About the whales and the people...

Debogus, I generally agree with most of what you have to say.. It is no secret that I am rampantly conservative.. Check out my posts... I must say that I am somewhat on the side of the whales, here.. To be honest with you I think trading 75% of the Earths human population to save the lives of the whales is an equitable deal..
I don't think a whale has ever pissed me off. I couldn't begin to tell you how many people have.. It is unfortunate that you live in Mexifornia.. I wouldn't live there for any amount of money, though, I must admit that Austin is about as damn liberal.. A sub in San Francisco Bay??? I don't know, it might not be such a bad thing..

Inspector Fuzz, Maybe that should be where we could put all the lawyers and then turn off all the defences to that spot only.Clean 2 spots at the same time....I can add a few people to the list of humans you were thinking of too..That way maybe a couple of whales could live at least a while longer..

Hell interupting the Whales radar is much better than strapping bombs to thier heads like we used to do. Do a search! We have dolphins in the Marines these days!! Cant kill one of our own..Hehehehe

Maybe it was that whale that splashed me at seaworld when I was 5.

Now youve gone and made me rethink this.

Concidering that the attacks would probally be centered on the large cities ie: new york ,frisco, LA etc and these tend to be big liberal bases

OH MY GOD what was I thinking

Save the whale,SAVE the whale
Have to write congress and senate to get this stopped.
And tell all the people you know about this travisty that we are commiting.

Together we can protect our ocean living friends.
