I run a gas heli so excuse if this is a stupid question....
Can one connect Li-po batteries in series on a electric heli thereby increasing the time in the air considerably ?

Thanks

Li-Po battery for electric heli

Yes, you can connect Lipos in series - which gives more voltage (power) - or in parallel which gives more capacity (duration).

Most of your larger electric helis use two battery packs wired in series. My Logo 20 uses two 12cell nicad packs, or two 4s4p Tanic packs.

For any electric heli, Lipos are the way to go.
