Hi All –

I wanted to share the great deal I just got at Sears on a Sentry Fire-Safe Chest that I plan to use for lipo storage.

The normal price for the Sentry Fire-Safe Chest (Model #: 1110) at Sears is normally $21.99, however it is currently on sale for $19.99. Then, I used a $10.00 off $20.00 coupon (see link below) reducing the price to $9.99. Try to beat that with a stick!

Hurry, the coupon is only good until Saturday, October 23rd!

Regards,

Air_Screw

Note: The Sears I went to had the safe on backorder and I was still able to use the coupon.

I'm not sure this is the way to go, since this safe is designed to protect the contents from an external fire.

Putting the flammable, explosive items on the inside, and locking them in tight may turn this into a grenade.

Of course, that's just a theory, it would depend on how much energy is released by an exploding lipo battery.

It is a great price though

Thanks for the input, Newdaddy!

Does anyone else have opinions/suggestions/experiences regarding using this safe for lipo storage? Maybe drill some holes in it to vent the gasses?

Regards,

Works great.

The idea is to contain the fire. The fire safe will keep the fire in just as well as it keeps it out.

I use one of the plain metal box looking ones. Anything that is flame retardant and has a lid will work fine for LiPo's.
You don't EVER want to lock a charging battery into a box. Like NewDaddy said it can just turn into a grenade if the box lets pressure build up. Just shut the lid unlocked is fine.

Buddy of mine had the fire safe and got tired of carrying the best to the field.
He went to Target and got the metal box like mine. Double walled and has some insulation inbetween to keep the heat out (or in. ) and was less than 15.00.

Yes, cell phones and laptops use lithium batteries, but each cell has a protection circuit to disable the cell in case of a problem.

RC batteries have no protection circuit. (Other than the user, who is required to continuously monitor the charging and discharging.)

Also, cell phones and laptops don't discharge their batteries from full to empty in roughly 6 minutes, so they don't work them as hard.

However, I know a lotta people who should lock up their cell phones, I see them on the road all the time

Having had a lipo puff up at the field (due to a faulty charger) I was glad I had my fireproof box to transport it for safe disposal.

I suppose the alternative is to carry a bucket of salt water everywhere, but that tends to be more messy than the fireproof box. (But it would work even better on cell phones - and their abusers )
