I am new to RC helicopter. I brought a Raptor 50SE and a OS50 engine recently. I am slowly putting all the parts together. I am going to buy the Transmitter package ( JR9303 with 811 servo and gy401) from Heliproz. The following are my questions:

What should I buy for the Rx batteries? where can I buy it?
Should I buy "Voltwatch"?

I am following ratortechnique to built my heli. Does it cover all the mods?

Thanks for your advise!

Ray, welcome to helis, and RunRyder. Good choice for equipment. No mods needed on the Raptor! Minimum battery 1700ma NiCad. Try RadicalRC.com is one very good place to buy batteries. I'm not a fan of the VoltWatch, because I use another method to check, but it is very conservative, and will keep you safe.

Raptor Technique build covers the stock setup. I had to figure out some of the mods that came with my Veloci Raptor from Heliproz.

The flybar control setup being the most challenging. If you need any pictures of the head, shoot me a PM. For some reason Maverikk assumes that anyone that orders thier parts can put them together without instructions or even an exploded view.

Duralites?

Duralites are great and I've got them in my helis:

http://www.cjwoods.com/Duralite.htm

But they are probably overkill when starting out. A high capacity JR pack (1900mAh) will give you about 5 flights when learning and the pack is pretty reasonably priced. There are better NiCad packs, but I had good experience with these.

The Duralite settup is about 5 - 10 times the price of a NiCad setup and is expensive to smash up in a crash; more likely as a learner (well was for me anyway).

Of course you may go with the 'buy once, buy the best philosphy" and go for the Duralites.

I use a Sub-C 2400 4.8v Nicad pack, you can get one from :

cheapbatterypacks.com

I also use the Venom battery gauge:

http://www.venom-racing.com/

I like it better than the Voltwatch because it supports both 4.8 & 6.0.

More questions

Thanks for all your advise.
I considered the Duralites package before becasue it includes everything. It is little bit expensive. I visited cheapbatterypacks.com and I came up with the following selection.Does it sound right to you guy?

Custom Pack Information

Custom Pack ID: C-4-CP2400SCR-14-FT-HITECMAL-*B*
Cell Name: CP2400SCR
Configuration: FLAT
Number of cells: 4
Wire: 14A
Plug: HITECMAL
Dimensions (approximate): 3.52 x 1.68 x 0.88 inches
Weight (cells only): 8oz
Price: $19.50
(Price includes 3 Bars @ .50 = $1.50)

I have limited knowledge about battery. Duralite package is 7.4 volts but Pcligtonjr uses 4.8volts. Do I need to buy the tx and rx before I decide which ones to buy?
I do need to buy a charger. Is any charger would be fine? Do I need a regulator too ?

Thanks
Ray

Now everyone looking.
Thanks Ruff
Great packs and prices. Anyone know they should discharge the battery packs?
I know a lot of car guys do. Seems like the heli and plank guys dont do it. Maybe people dont care or dont KNOW. Discharge them. Its better.

Discharging batteries is supposed to make them last longer by eliminating the "memory effect". In reality, this only affects NiCad batteries. NiMh, Li-Ion, and Li-Poly batteries generally do not exhibit the memory effect, meaning discharging is a waste of time and battery cycles.

Why do most people use NiCd batteries in flight equipment? I have used NiMh batteries in all of my land-based nitro vehicles and never had a problem.

I was even thinking of buying some NiMh 5000 mAh "C" cells and making a battery pack out of them. My heli is a little tail heavy anyway, so that might add just enough extra weight to the nose. Other than the side effect of balancing it out, this means that I could run the heli all day on one charge!

"Why do most people use NiCd" Because NiMH is not all it's cracked up to be. I tried a couple of 2700ma NiMH packs, then removed both packs, and went back to NiCd. Based on my personal experience, I would go from NiCd to Duralite, without the middle steps.

I understand. I like NiMH as well. I got hooked when I bought a E-MAXX. Now I build my own matched packs. A lot of poeple I have talked to and seen at The Helispot all use NiCd. Just figure if they are going to use them they should use them right. I have never used LiPo but hear they are great.

Melted Batteries

Use caution as I have been care less and melted NiMH and NiCd batteries in my E-Maxx. Gear it wrong and/or run it too long. That baby will start smoking. I think I have a photo of my E-Maxx motor exploding in mid-air I will try to find and POST. Not a heli but still a sight to see.

The only real negative is the cost initially. For me, with a couple too many helicopters, I would have to have the Duralites and charger for some, NiCds and related chargers for the others. I'm not ready to futz around with more chargers quite yet. My current system does me fine. But the Duralite time will come.
