Is anybody using a tapeless video camera?... one that records directly to digital media of some sort.

I just bought a DXG-301V from Radio Shack. It looked like the perfect idea. It records directly to SD media and doesn't have all the weight and expense (and vibration sensitivity) of a tape mechanism.

Sadly, this unit has poor video capabilities. It records 640x480 at 15fps. The frame rate here is a real deal breaker. The compression artifacts are also pretty annoying.

At 320x240 it can record 30fps, but the picture is just too small to show any detail.

The camera requires a lot of light. A well lit room, indoors, at night, is not enough light.

At $200 it's pretty cheap. Maybe a good gift for a child. I returned the one I bought... unflown of course.

Fisher / Sanyo is about to come out with a new camera that looks promising.

I did the math to compare the bit rates with the (less than stellar) DXG-301V. It looks like the FVD-C1 records at a little more than twice the bit rate of the other one. That jives with the specs that Fisher is reporting. It will record 640x480x30fps at either 3mbps or 2mpbs for varying quality.

This camera is a lot more expensive at $900.

Also, I'm not too sure about how one would mount such an ergonomic camera to a heli.

Guys,

You'll have to give this technology a little time to mature. You are talking about a cross between a digital camera and a video camera. The crunch here is that live video at 30FPS eats up a huge amount of memory if you are to keep the image size and quality up. Technology will soon find a solution.

Video cameras and digital still cameras both started this way.
