Same here RotorX, what frightens me is how close it would have been from hitting his neck instead

My 2 accidents

Hawk Sport
OS .32
Futaba CAP 9

I was learning to fly and my heli and was on training sticks. This was my 5th or 6th flight and was already hovering around. But then when i went into a hover approx 4 feet off the grown the heli had no control functions at all. First mistake was hovering in my front yard to close to cars and trees and people as a beginner. I grabbed the heli in midair by the boom trying to keep the blades away from my face reached under with my left hand to pull the fuel line to cut fuel supply the blades hit my arm and it felt like more of a vibration did not even break skin. Glad was arm not face even though the blades were only a inch or 2 from my face. With in a couple hours my arm started turning black and blue from bruising (i will post photos this evening) by the next day by hole bicep was bruised all around my arm. Reason for heli problem the battery vibrated out of the reciever.

Next accident was my stupidity approx 3 weeks into learning i figured since i was flying all over the sky so i started working with the idle up settings to do high inverted hovers. The heli got into the sun to where i could not see it so i got it to the ground not thinking i thought i had a run away engine that the engine control arm poped off so being in a residential area and approx 15 mins left in fuel i had to do someting i took my shirt off and approched the heli threw my shirt in. the shirt ended up like a rag and my heli exploded in many pieces. (My first official heli destroyed since the begaining also with brand new 100.00 carbon blades After collecting the pieces it had dawned on me that I WAS STILL IN IDLE UP all i had to do was turn it off. COSTLY MISTAKE ON MY PART.

Now i am on close to 60 or better flights with out a accident this year alone since started flying aug 2003

Add to this this past summer throttle clevise came off when i was flying around at a field. The OS .32 engine is spring loaded to full open when linkage is off. The connection came off during take off and u know how long u fly hawks on full tank with feeder tanks. i landed the heli in the middle of the field the engine was full bore. i was so nervous i just left it there on the ground instead of flying around to relieve the RPMs. Heli ran just over 15 mins on the gound high speed. Says so much for OS Engines i am still running this engine today with no after affects of the maxed contunious speed.

Stupid, Stupider & Stupidest

I sort into three different levels the insane acts I have performed. And have seen with my own three eyes the acts of others who for reasons still undecided choose the most unlikely pattern of behavour.
I say this cause RotorX," who lives across the pond " used one of my personal favorites stupidest in his description. When I find myself haveing to make a desission to act quickly in a set of circumstances I haven't been in before, Well let me say that word Stupidest sorta lingers in the background of my mind. Just waiting for it's chance to be used again. It seemes to fit a general class of errors I make when faced with previous uncalculated experiences. For an example when I got married Man I didn't think any farther ahead then the honey moon. Depending on the day, any one of my previous defined classes of errors come up. Did I say that! See there It happened so fast much of the time I don't even know it is coming! Experience says don't step on rotor blades spinning at 2,000 RPM. Don't jump off tall buildings. And pray it isn't you that finds him self standing naked in the middle lane of the LA freeway at rush hour.
Cause if it is you, what you are going to do may amuse others to no end and get ready cause here comes that word up from the merky depts of your mind. I live High in The Mountians of Northeastern AZ that is a place not a condition

this kind of accident have had happened to me once
i was tuning my engine in my backyard and for safety reasons i took of the blades(lucky me) i just spooling it up and all of a sudden i had no control the head was spinning in all directions like a wild beast (in idle up full power) i live in a populated area so i decided i had to doing something i actually crawed under the heli and sqeeze the exhaust deflector to shut the engine nothing loss in this accident accept a plastic tank which the flybars chopped it into pieces

Oh..shiiieeettt !!!

Probally explains why they are always cold to the touch - hehe no seriously - like you said it a judgement call that does not require a lot of thinking, it had to be stopped and i just did what i did - then after thought mmmm what was i thinking.

Drunk Monk

I have seen that damage to Robs arm up close - man its frightening, you have to give him credit tho - he managed to auto what was left of the heli down and then went off and made a parts list after being told that the waiting time for a doctor at the hospital was 5 hours

Maybe it;s just me, but going anywhere near an out of control heli almost seems like suicide. You guys have been real lucky so far and I think the lessons to be learned here are:

1 - Only start up your Heli at the field, especially for testing - if you are testing it then it is because you are not entirely sure what will happen. No backyard startups etc.

2 - If your heli gets out of control run for the hills warning as many people as possible to get out of the way (or turn on your Heli-shield).

3 - Never stick your hand/transmitter/"shirt-off-your-back"/towel into anything that resembles a whirling mass of destruction waiting to happen, it's just not worth it.

Just my humble opinion...
