Hey all,
I got a quick question, today, I burned 3 glow plugs after 3 flights! The heli flew great for about half the tank and then the engine wouldn't go to more than half throttle, as soon as I set it on the ground, I throttled up and the engine quits! This happened 3 times and is really frustrating (I am using os #8 plugs) I checked out the piston, and this is what I found:

The middle is pretty smooth, while the outer half is kind of sandy/rough...

Is the engine dead now? Or do I just have to clean it?

Nope. Something is coming unglued

Likely a bearing failure

I don't get how it could be bearing failure when it is at the piston...

Can't quite make out which engine it is except it looks like "ABC" If it has a metal retainer on the rear bearing (rather than composite) Fatigue causes the retainer to break up and the pieces go up through the transfer port and beat the hell our of the piston top and head before departing out the exhaust. (Or a foreign object can do the same as well as the element from a glow plug)

looks like the tt36...mine also has those rough surface at the edges, but doesn't lose any power after all the lean runs, debris, bad bearing....

maybe you can check your rear bearing. I remember that when my the cage of my rear bearing started disintegrating, I changed a few plugs within that two gallons.

Nope, Thats what happens when the filament from the glow plug bounces around the combustion chamber and eats away at the surface. The head looks the same doesn't it? I had it happen to me once or twice.

I wouldn't even try to repair it. After a new piston/ring/sleeve you still won't know if the rest of the engine is good. So you may as well get a new TT39 or OS32 or OS37.

You have to add bearings to the list of parts as well. I had a similar look to my Webra .91 recently. I removed the backplate and found one little piece of the bearing cage gone Back to Horizon it goes.

Later, Guy
