i have a hawk sport. i mounted my servo to the tail using the Century kit that comes with the aluminum boom clamps and the CF plate for the servo. the problem is that due to the location of the servo in the veritcal plain i had to use a long servo horn and now the gyro (401) will not work with it. when i run the main rotor up to speed to hover and the skids brake lose friction i get a serious lack of tail rotor effectiveness and it just spins. how do i fix this?

Are you sure you have your gyro direction correct? If I recall from my hawk days if you were to move that servo you would end up reversing it. You might check that, it seems like the right symptom. Will it spin either way? Just whichever way it happens to break loose? Gyro.

How long is your servo arm? My sceadu and 401 works great with a 19mm arm. I can't imagine a much longer servo arm.

Also, make sure your tail is absolutely as smooth as possible. All the hawk sports I've ever worked on were sub par out of the box. The plastic links on the tail pitch slider were stiff, and the pitch link to blade grip arrangement needed work too. These might be ARFs, but they need all kinds of love. I wish it was a kit instead.

Good luck.

Thanks, John Cadwell

You have to reverse the GYRO and Servo as I recall. I had the same problem when I went to the tail boom mount (went with the cheaper mount but same idea). It took over an hour at the field of screwing around to finally get it right.

As I recall, you need to do both. The Gyro needs to know that it operates the opposite and otherwise you get that spin when you lift off.

What I did was get it all set up, then with the Heli sitting there I moved the rudder stick to the left which is what I'd have to do if there was a gust of wind from the right (the gust of wind from the right would blow the tail to the left which would cause the nose to rotate to the right which would require a left rudder command to compensate for). I looked at whether the servo arm moved forwards or backwards and now that I had this figured out, I pushed on the tail towards the left (like a gust of wind from the right) and made sure the servo moved in the same direction. (I hope I have my lefts and rights correct).

In any case, I managed to get it dialed back in again OK using this technique.

Got Money? Send it to me, I'm a Heli Addict.

Al,
I have seen a few posts from you on the Century forum. Are you trying something different? I am in no way chastizing you, I myself have ventured this way. I have a brand new Carbon Max sitting in my stables as we speak. And am dying to try it out. It looks very promising. I was just curious, and ribbing at the same time.

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

Brian, I like ALL helis, for that matter, anything that flys! I also have a Century R22 scale ship, done except for mounting the fuse. Arizona Bill did the paint work for me, but I have not had time to finish it yet.
