All I want is a cheap cell phone that my wife can use on trips. Just in case the car breaks down, she can call AAA and give me a message. No monthly fees. Maybe a pay as you go plan. But all these plans have minutes that expire after 30 or 60 days or so. Is there a plan that lets you buy say 30 minutes and is good for 6 months or a year. RunRyder members help!

what about minute cards? buy a card thats good for 20 mins. when she needs it, pull out the card and follow the instructions to activate it, then its good for 20 mins of airtime, so whenever she makes calls, those minutes are used and they arent used unless shes calling someone. do you have that option?

I think you still need at least basic service to use the cards. I'm not sure, can you call to activate if you are not on a plan? Will the cell phone even connect without a previous activation? There has to be a simple solution to this! Money grubbing cell companies!

I used to use tracfone as an '"emergency' phone. It's prepaid wireless, and your minutes don't expire. Check it ouot.

Most PAYG cellular phones that allow electronic top-up vouchers will work and connect to the airtime provider to input the code on the card without any existing credit.

A non-used PAYG phone wont even use up its "free" credit that comes with the phone until you use it/register for the first time

Hey OldAL

By the wife a real cell phone and get her 800 to 1000 mins with Nationwide coverage. She'll love ya for it and probley use all the minutes anyway...just so you won't feel cheated by the cell company.
Opinions are like backsides, everyone has one, no need to hear it and only others stink!
Wonder where this one fits in at???

if you have gsm coverage then you could buy a triband gsm phone with say a UK vodafone prepay sim card and that would work in the US calls probably cost $1.50 per minute but u wouldnt PAY ANY LINE RENTAL and credit would be valid indefinately. also if you were to ring her then u would have to dial a uk number and she would pay for the uk to usa leg of the call. just a thought if not that practical.( good for occasional visitors)

In a way, you could just use any old cell phone. All of them will connect if your wife dials 911. Even if the phone isn't activated. That is something to consider. I had a friend that had one of the minute phones, he hated it. I guess for emergencies it would work fine.

oh i should mention credit and accounts never expire in the UK as long as you make one connection every six months. see www.vodafone.co.uk and find pay as you go and then roaming to see coverage in your neck of the woods. i believe florida is well covered with gsm. you can buy a sim on ebay.co.uk for a couple of dollars all u need is a gsm phone that works in the states and the uk ie triband. probably not 2 practical though
