i was looking at an os 50 heli engine on ebay and they say it is non-ringed.
i know my os32 is that way but i wasn't sure about this os 50.
could it be an older engine?
i was just wondering if it would be worth bidding on?

OS makes a 50 plane motor, most likely that is what it was,,,

but if it did have the large heat sink head, it could be a heli motor with the after-market Preformance Specialty ABC piston and liner, which is a very powerful motor.

i am a little weary about buying a used engine, but so many people are
buying the hiper 50 engine that a lot of used os 50's are being sold
i don't know if i would be able to tell thedifference, since i have only flown thirty's.

sorry,i know what the hiper looks like.
what i meant to say is i probably wouldn't notice the power difference between the os 50 and the hiper 50 compared to my os32.
i imagine that to me both fifty engines are goint to feel real strong compared to my os 32.
sorry about the confusion.

In the last 30 or so years OS has made only 2 50 size engines - The old 50FSR-H which was ringed and the current 50SX and 50SX-H and 50SX-H "Hyperhead" versions and they are all ringed as well. If there is no ring in that 50 then its been modified in some way but I doubt it has a Performance Specialties ABC piston/liner assembly as I don't think that they made a conversion ABC piston/liner for any of the above mentioned engines.

Shemp,,, I just went to the OS site,,, funny how most of their plane motors are FX but the new 50 is an SX,,, (I thought it was a FX)

Performance Specialties does make a ringless piston/liner assembly for the OS 50 heli motor, I called them a month ago and talked to them about it before I ordered my Hyper, plus this summer someone on RR did the conversion and posted on it, as I know he did not put much time on his motor yet..

I guess I should add, rather this piston/liner assembly is made for a plane or not, Performance Specialties told me it will work in the heli motor.

Thanks Jim - Looks like I stand corrected but way back when the 50SX-H first arrived a friend of mine cooked his real good and inquired of Performance Specialties wether they offered a true ABC conversion for the 50 SX-H as they offred for the 61SX-H WC. Their response at that time was "No Plans to offer any piston/liner sets for the 50SX-H" but this was several years back now so it looks like they changed their mind about it. Does their offering have the same porting and timing as the stock 50SX-H or has it been modified for more poop?

the engine looks like it has a large heatsink, but i am too new to tell.
it is on ebay#5927305633.
i have all winter to get my raven fifty up and running,so i am in no hurry.
i am just trying to get the raven fifty going by spring, but try more stuff with the hawk sport as it is cheap to fix.
it is kind of nice when you know you already have one going and can really take your time with the second.
if you guys get a chance just go to ebay and take a look, and let me know if it looks decent.
if not i will just keep looking,i am still not sure if i should just fork out the dough and get the hiper.
