Why ? (or what is the benefit) that the servo positions are different on the Tempest 3D and the FAI version.

I checked the onlines drawings and sure enough they are different. Learned something new every day.....

Good Question. I will be watching for an answer.

the FAI frames have the PEM nuts installed on the right frame side, since the t/r mounts to the right of the model. The wire cutout for the servo is on the left frame instead of the right frame.

The t/r on the 3D version still mounts on the left side.

Having got both its as carey shurley said, its to do with the servo for the tail,

The 3D has it on the left the FAI is on the right. Hope this helps.

That is correct. Not that I needed to say that. The frames are actually the same with the exception of the material they are made of. Of course the FAI frames are carbon, and the 3D's are G-10. With a little bit of work the frames for the FAI can actually be switched around to make them the exact same servo layout as the 3D by moving the PEM nuts. But I wouldn't, nor did I do it to mine. There is realy no difference other than which side the tail is on. Which to me made no difference either. But that is me.

Build it, fly it, crash it. Repeat as often as needed.

FrankT, the difference is in the tail rotor location like Carey stated. But the reason it differs from the 3-D version is because on the Tempest rolls are more axial during high speed FAI manuevers with the tail rotor on the right. I'm not sure if it was accidental or intentional of the design. At least that's what I recall Gordie Meade saying when I asked the same question.

Gordie, keep me straight!

Thank you all,

Yes, the tail servo, nick servo and tail rotor location has changed position between FAI & 3D and I could not find out why they did this.

But apparently it doesn't matter for the flying behavior so I am fine.

its definitely NOT accidental that its on the right side. This is a feature contributed by Cliff Hiatt, FAI-F3C World Champion.

Carey, I think you misunderstood my statement. Obviously it wasn't an accident. What I was talking about was the roll characteristic. "Was it the reason or an added benefit of having the tail on the right" was what I was refering to. I recall Gordie telling me about the axial rolls but I couldn't remember if there were other reasons for the right side mounting.

understood.

you are correct though, it was purposely moved to the right side because cliff's testing showed an improvement in t/r behaviour both in precision hovering maneuvers and aerobatics.

Also

Incidentally, the same roll improvement showed up on the Pro IIK also, so all of the F3C Pro IIK-Ts that I see have the TR on the right side of the model. Mine does.
