Zoom 400 Power video with Himax4200kv

I promised some of you I'd get a quick video up showing the power of the Himax 4200kv motor with the 8tooth pinion. Well here is a small one. Tons more to come with some crazy 3D pilotry, just ran out of time tonight. Setup is at the end. It is 10mb large, but I really wanted people to be able to see it.
Enjoy

Setup

Mine gets too hot above 8T, but to be honest I don't have all that much mad scientist time yet!!! I think it will be most happy with a 9T on the main 10-11 Tooth on the tail and an overall pitch range of -5 to +4. That is my goal, just gotta order some more parts to do it!!!

Since you have to use 2 pinions for the Himax, is it possible to run a 9T for the main and a 10T for the tail?

Do Obviously it has the power for tic tocs using an 8T, wondering what the 9T would Do. I am running 10T currently, but the motor gets very hot

Pinions

Mine gets too hot with anything bigger than the 8T, but I want more tail authority. Therefore I am going to leave the 8T on the main, and try a 10T on the tail. Should work even better. Tail is rock solid till the pack starts to dump. Just a constant 2500-2600 is all you need. Any more and you are wasting energy or tempting parts failure.

I just finished putting an 8T for the main and 10T for the tail.

Thats definately the setup to use!!!!!!!

Motor stayed cool, yet good power. Not as much as the 10T, but then again the 10T heated the motor too much.

How hot does the battery get? where did you get the pinions? Did your flight time increase any?

Sweet

I knew that would be the setup man. Way too cool that we can split the drive like this. I'll be trying it this weekend for sure!!!

battery and himax 4200 both stayed rather cool. warm but not blistering hot like the 10T.

I am wondering if the 9T on the main might be a good mix between heat and power. I'll try that when I have a chance.

So final setup is:

Himax 4200 with 8T main / 10T tail

Thunder Power 1320's

401/ HS50

rest is HS56's

Phoenix 35 (they were out of 25 and 35 cost the same)

lightened paddles with custom made paddleholder (both together weight 2 grams) (lighter than piccolo paddles)

Longer flybar

I had to elongate the mounting holes for the 8T to get good mesh, then with the 10T for the tail, I had to slightly notch the cross support because the 10T will slightly rub the cross member because you have to move the motor in so much.

Pinion Setup

CNC,
Rough pic but you'll get the point. No mods to the frame of the heli at all. Just took an 11 tooth pinion and cut it in half, then chamfered the bottom just a bit. Stacked in on top of the 8 Tooth and it all meshes exceptionally well. Tests at Dusk were incredible, we'll see tomorrow.

THIS IS THE COMBO FOR ME!!! Low heat, locked tail.

I was too lazy to cut the gear Easier to notch the frame.

Well, needless to say, I finally got the thing dialed in so sweet. It was flying awesome...............

Until it locked out from about 50 feet. I had absolutely no control of it. I was doing an inverted climb out when it locked. I tried everything, but with no response. Even after it hit pavement, no response.

Not sure what cause it to lock out.

Result, a totaled heli. Repair costs are going to be about $150-$170

Thinking I will just buy a new kit because the time and effort to tear it down and rebuilt the bad parts just seems easier to buy a new kit................

Atleast I found the right combination for the next one. Just getting ready to lighten the 401 and cut all the wires back too.

How do you keep your pinions on? That's been my biggest problem. Tried CA, Loctite, etc. They keep coming loose. The Parma 2mm pinions are too tight to press fit on the Himaxx shaft so you have to drill the pinions and then press them on. Still a tight fit and even with the green loctite I still spin um.

a micro lock out, that is a first

I feel for you, at least the repair bill isnt too bad. Thats whats nice about the micros, you can head to the field and know that even if you completely demolish the thing the bill wont be too bad

Parma too tight?????

Everyone I know uses the Parma gears and they press fit fine. No drilling needed.

You might want to relook at how you are trying to press fit them.

regarding the crash, it hit nose first, that is why you see the frames completely destroyed. Looks like the only reusable parts are the head pieces, the swash, the tail box (not the gears) and maybe the boom and landing gear.

Everything else needs replaced including all the gears, mainshaft, spindle, frames, etc.

I chalk the motor up in a vise then bang the pinions on with a claw hammer. Am I doing something wrong? Guess I need to revisit the issue and give it another try.

Just kidding of course. I think what I need to do is create a better method for pressing on the pinions.

Thanks.
