Well, after leaning out the hi speed needle to a little over one turn, pulling the collective back to +9 at the top and -9 at the bottom, verifying the head speed is around 1850-1900 and also checking to make sure I'm getting full throttle at the top of my throttle curve, I'm still bogging down pretty bad even at full power, full pitch straight and level flight. I almost lost the engine when I did my first loop. Anyone (James, Payton, Bill) have any other things I should be checking? I am flying with the governor off for now until I get this figured out. So I have taken that out of the equation. I am just about to finish the first gallon of Walmart camper fuel with 100:1 Amsoil. I'm pretty hesitant to ring this thing out in idle up 2 until I can sort out the engine issues. I may need to make a trip to Houston to have the masters check it out.

Thanks,
Boiler.

Were you trying to use the gov before at all? ... Get at least two gallons on the machine before doing aerobatics, and by no means do any hard manuvers without swashplate to throttle mixing, or using a gov..

Bill,

I was trying to use the GV1 before, but am having problems with getting it set up with my 8103. This is my first attempt at setting up a governor and I don't think it's working right yet. So in the meantime, I thought I would get everything set up mechanically correct and get all my curves working first, then start to figure out the GV1 and Stator Gator thing. The only aerobatics I have tried so far is one loop. But I will take your advise and fly another gallon before attempting any more.

BTW, is anyone going to Tulsa this weekend who has Predator Gasser experience? may be worth the trip to have another set of eyes check out my set-up.

Thanks for the help.
Dave

Bill, note that he is on a 5.8 ratio if I am not mistaken.

A quick call......

And it seems that he may be lean on the high speed needle. Just so others can understand the symptom when they see it, here is the diagnosis:

SYMPTOM:

During extended full throttle operations, the engine seems to lose power......by this, I mean 3-4 seconds into the full power operation, teh rpm begins to decay, and continues to get lower. Dave notes that to recover, he would lower the throttle and let the engine rpm's begin to build again, and then continue normal flight operations.

What is happening is this: the high speed needle (and confirmed by the position he reports it to be at) is lean. This really doesn't show up in normal flight operations until you are operating at higher throttle/power demand levels. Hover and spool up are MOSTLY controlled by the low speed needle, and with the inherant power the 231 makes with the torpedo muffler, the carb is not open very far for an extended amount of time. Flying into a 20 MPH headwind at full power from one end of the field to the other, he noticed the headspeed and power coming down as well after 4 seconds or more.

Remedy:
Dave was advised to open the high speed needle from the 1 turn open he is at now to 1 1/8- 1 1/4 and give this a try. Also note, he is at the 1 gallon mark of run time, and these engines won't really begin to make optimum power until the 3 -4 gallon mark. He was also advised to refrain from extended full throttle operations until the end of the 2nd gallon. As I told him myself......easy for me to say......but hard to refrain from.

Thanks for letting me share this with the guys, Dave....and let me know how well it works out for you next time you get a chance to go and play.

Mine was doin the same thing for the first gallon, I thought the thing was screwed up, but as the motor broke in (took about a gallon and a half before it started making ANY kind of power at all) the heli came on strong. Just today I was showing my predator gasser off....(had a budy interested a gasser, and I just put my carbon 720's on). I spooled her up, hit the idle up switch (runnin about 1850 in idle up 2). Let her warm up and SLAMMED the collective. The heli absolutely ripped straight up! I had to act like it was totally normal. But have to admit, after bragging about it so hard, the climb out rate even suprised me!! I mean DAMN!!! its da shizzy!! (got about three gallons through mine now...

I hear ya there.....

After this latest round of helping guys get theirs built up and sorted out, I too might have to get me another one, Chris......

You need to make that call tomorrow and get your components lined up.......you probably don't want a footrace with Raymond or myself on getting one in the air !

I got the jing for the heli but not the engine.

Like I said on the phone, I just bought that scooter and gas prices are killing my play fund.
