I've been flying a bit without my landing gear lately, but today I decided to strap it back on and get some orientation issues worked out.

What I did was get the heli up tail-in, hover for a bit, get comfortable. Then I started hovering facing left, then facing right. Then I started doing the tee drills (the ones where you go left 10 ft, stop, back to center, stop, right 10 ft, etc.etc...). I did fine except when:

I had the heli facing left and I was going right (hence flying backwards) past center. I guess that's the point where it's kind of like you are flying nose-in. But, i'm going to keep working on it until i get comfortable doing this drill left and right.

I also did some forward flight in the figure 8 pattern. While doing the figure 8, i didn't even leave the ground. I was skipping along the ground kind if like I was driving a car.

I had a good time today, but I sure have some things to work on. I want to make sure I have the fundamentals down pat before I get into more advanced flight. I know it's too easy to learn bad habits when you skip steps.

Matt,

Before you get into anything more advanded, you need to learn to fly 40 to 60 +++++++ ft above the ground!

I was the same way you were. Always flying low to the ground...after all, the heli is easier to see. It was not untill I flew so high I could barely see my chopper did I finnaly progress in my capabilities. Height is your friend...THE GROUND IS NOT...live it - learn it!

What kind of chopper are you flying?

Save time when crossing a one-way street by only looking in one direction
