Hi

Yesterday I receiver my lightly used Joker CX bought from ebay . It is only missing receiver, receiver battery and main batteries. It is equiped with 24-5 motor, standard ESC, Gyro 401/9253 tail servo, 9202 servoes and carbon boom, main and tail blades.

I will buy a Futaba 149DP receiver.
I will proberbly buy a standard receiver battery.

For main batteries I am very tempted to go for LiPos.

So what LiPo configuration (Brand, Cell configuration, Dealer) should I go for???

:-) Thomas

Al, they are!

I just flew the joker on a 24-4 on 23 tooth pinion with the 10s1p ansaproducts.co.uk cells and it ROCKS!

I have still to get a few more flights on these cells to see how they go, but they seem to have very large plates which help with the current draw.

We will do a video to prove it, but we want a really good one and will have it on monday/tuesday.

Happy flying

I'm doing the math with #s you gave me and even at 42A it's not enough for hard core 3D
it does have the grunt for hardcore 3d. no question. some basic 3d was done today without probs on not a even close to full pack.

also bear in mind this is not for runing time. the only time needed out this thing is a few mins for schedules. there is an 8amp pack for general flying. good for about 16 mins.

it done some 3d today as is and to say it was impessive is an understatement. it'll only get better through time. the batts are just being "run in" and being charged carefully so they are not at anywhere near full capacity.

also the gearing is getting tweaked to get the most out of the motor. BUT this is the most important factor. it's just over 8lbs.

the tempreture today was next to nothing but this was a very tentitive test flight as everything was new. we will have a video next week.

cheers

Ok, it sounds very interesting with 1p configuration. But I am looking for duration and very light 3D because I am still a beginner.

I have seen that minicopter offers 11s2p (4400mAh) at 449 euro/543$ and 10s3p (6600mAh) at 599 euro/725$ packs directly. Is one of these packs the way to go?

Edited... prices in $ was wrong

2100 mAh in a Joker? Back to 6 minute or less flight times like we had with NiCads I suppose...

These are the ultra-heavy Kokam 2100s (I know someone who has a 3S pack of these 2100s he's been flying for some upcoming articles - 9 ounces for the 3S pack!). Not sure where things go wrong for Kokam in the energy density department, but thats really low - back down to just a little better than the best NiMh cells. In single 1P configurations, no doubt the cells will work, but practical? 1 hour+ to charge and fly for 6 minutes - doesnt seem all that attractive to most people.

When compared to other LiPos out there capable of 10-12C, these are twice the weight. That means you can have a 4000 mAh pack capable of 10C+ for the weight of a 20C capable 2100. Nearly the same level of power, with nearly double the flight time using the 4000s. For most, theyd want at least 2P using these 2100s - but you could get 6000-8000 mAh 10C packs for less or the same weight, plus the prices arent too far off either. At $125 for a 3S pack and $85 for a 2S pack (prices in the US for the Kokam 2100s), thats $420 for 10S 2100 mAh!

Neat cells nonetheless - think I'll try a 3S pack myself just to see what all the hype is about. But I can say having seen most of the previous Kokams rated at 8C and tested to deliver barely 6C, I wont hold my breath. Even the Kokam 340 pack I had only delivered 75-80% capacity at 20C discharge, unlike the 90% they advertise. Steve Neu had test results on the 340s and other Kokams like this too.

Al - those cells interconnects are a new thing from Kokam. It allows you to assemble a pack without solder so the cells can be removed and balanced, or configurations switched around. As you can see, Kokam hasnt had any luck yet building packs beyond 3S that stay balanced very long. Hence the lack of availability of packs like 4S and 5S.
