Anyone speak Aircooled out there? Current project: "63 Ragtop sunroof, rebuilt motor (gonna go), brakes, new pans, panels almost ready for paint.
To Come: Black Concept (possibly clear coat) which is the original color, black canvas top, White interior w/ tan carpet (maybe sewfine), Lowered (maybe narrowed) beam on front, pollished 5 spoke Empi style wheels, 2110 GEX stroked with 44 IDA Webers and hide away muffler. Stock trim, pop outs, roof rack, German running boards. Get the picture?
Undecided: Narrowing beam? Keep wheels stock? Flat cut cam gears?
Any suggestions? Gonna be a Bad Ass Bug!

This is a great project and diversion! If anyone has or knows of any VDub Hop ups, I'll trade for Heli stuff possibly! But not all of my Heli stuff.

.
Used to have a '74 Bus with the Type 4. Warmed the engine up with a Holley 5200, cam, big bore kit, mechanical distributor, solid wires, etc. Would pull wheelies in 1st & 2nd. Lotta fun, but the heater sucked for Michigan winters so got rid of it.

Good luck with it. Sounds like a great project!

Brings back memories. I once had a '59 bug w/o a gas gauge but with a reserve tank w/ a floor mounted foot switch to swap between the main & reserve tank. To a 17 year old it was like a caddy!! And yes, the back seat was just fine!!

The Super was available in US until '78 but only as a convertible for the last year. The standard stopped around '72. No plans to chop it up for a Baja either! I would not be doing this one if it were not for it being a ragtop and kinda early. Cant wait to get it done. Sorry about all you Water Cooled guys, maybe someday you'll learn! With my engine as planned I will beat those big blocks off the line. Should have paint done in about a week!

Nice to see a Beetle, I had a well Blinged up one, all custom fibre glass interior, wizard body kit, frenched lights, big ICE, loud as f@@k exhausts, golf GTI seats, locks removed etc.. etc..
However one day I got excited on some country roads lost the back end cliped a ditch and flipped it on to its roof and back over, total write off, I was ok but to add insult to injury I was in a passenger in a mates car a couple of weeks later on the same road, some dosy women comes round the corner on the wrong side of the road and hits us head on at 60-70 mph, 3 weeks in hospital later and I was fine, got quite a bit of money, so I bought a Heli, so alls well that ends well
Hope the same doesn't happen to you mate, Hang 10 and all that.

Looks like your car came with a factory sunroof...??!!! That rocks.. I dont remember seeing many with that HANDY option... Now the swamp cooler Air conditioning unit is another rarity, my buddy had one on his safari bus.. and you know it actually worked pretty well.. looked like a jet engine hanging out the window. we told people it was a rocket assisted V'dub.

Hey Cp8, I grew up with these things and trust me keep it as stock as can be. That is without adding the common hop ups of the 21st century without loosing the reliability factor!! It's amazing what you can do with a new cam, bore kit, and a new carb. For a daily driver switch to electronic ignition and stay away from twin carbs. They look cool but end up causing you more headache than horsepower. I am sure that many people will be telling you to go with an overbuilt motor but if it's not a sandrail it's not worth the headache. Trust me, your car will be as reliable as a brand new F-150, if you keep it stock!!!!!!!

I agree with capnut

Grew up with VW's too.
Keep it stock
Ill pull a bigger resale val as clean and stock, no question.
There are too many hotted up ones, there are very few clean stock ones..

I've had the 1776 1nd 1835 both with multi carb setups. When dialed in they are awesome. I didn't have them for very long though because I sold them so I guess I don't really have a long term reliability history on them. I do know that stock or close to it deffinately are solid. Here is what I am looking at: http://www.gex.com/mainframe.htm . The 2110 is a ground shaking street racer. Check it out.

I was the mech for this Formula Vee, controlled formula class restricted to very stock VW 1200 engine. (pic of me with car)

Youd be surprised just how much power you can get from a stock VW.
A few carb mods with a drill and a bit of work on the dist curve does wonders.

that is great looking project. I have been working a V.W. project not a bug any more I am rebuilding a old Bradley gt kit car the only thing killing me at this point is the wiring and having time between work and flying to acctually work on. lots of fun though. good luck with your project.
