Hi,

How do you apply fibre glass onto balsa wood?

what do I need in order to do this?

What preparations do I need to do before applying the fibre glass?

Thanks.

You need primarily
1. Goo- epoxy, or polyester resin
2. Fiberglass cloth or mat of a certain weight.

If you're trying to tougthen the skin of the balsa and keep it light, use a 1 oz or less cloth. If the balsa is just the center of a structure that needs to be really strong, use 4 oz or greater on both sides.

Epoxy is nicer to work with and stronger than polyester resin. Marine supply stores carry it.
Mix goo carefully and well (2 minutes of stirring).
Apply thin coat with disposable brush to balsa.
Lay down cloth evenly, without wrinkles, the first time.
Carefully apply more goo to top of cloth.
Carefully use a flat plastic edge to tamp the cloth down firmly to the balsa and squeegee out the excess goo.
    Let cure undisturbed.
Always practice first to get the hang of it.

I probs start applying the fibre glass in the coming weeks, but a few last questions... is it okay to apply te fibre glass over a painted surface? or should I sand it off? and what kind filler should I use?

j_js;
Epoxy or polyester won't stick very well to paint. The more you sand off, the better. A raw balsa surface would be great- the goo will sink in well, and will strengthen the balsa much like it strengthens the fiberglass.
The goo is its own filler. If you want a really smooth goo finish, roll on one or two coats after the layup schedule is finished. (Roughen slightly between coats)

http://gougeon.com/ has really good info on composite construction. They're the parent company of the West System epoxies. http://www.fibreglast.com is also very informative, if I recall.
