I was just wondering if you have to switch to idle up 1 when your just starting to do Forward flight or can you just learn in normal mode? I have my heli setup to hover at half stick and the idle up switch is inhibited at the moment to save an accidentle change. I realize that with a setup to hover at half stick the heli will drop suddenly when the idle up switch is thrown , should I change my hover to the 3/4 stick setup to learn FF so that the change from idle 1 to 2 isnt so scarry.

Learning FF in normal is just fine, no need to go to idle up. If you do want to do so just mirror your pitch and throttle curves in Idle Up 1 and normal mode. If you want to increase your throttle a bit to speed up the headspeed in Idle up 1 go ahead. This way you will get use to flipping your flight mode switch as you fly. Then as you progress you can think of setting your curves in Idle up for switchless inverted as most have in Idle up.

I agree with rickc.

I started using idleups when I started to do descents from high up. Because as you start to descend you pull back on the the collective which also reduces the throttle. So you need to be carefull when coming down that you don't reduce the headspeed too much so that when you put in positive pitch to slow the descent you don't have enough headspeed to stop the descent.

I wouldn't bother changing you hovering stick position yet until you are comfortable flying round. It only takes a few tanks to get used to 3/4 stick position.

One other thing to consider is that some people learn to hover with little or no negative pitch in the normal curve. This is done to minimize killing the throttle and slamming the heli down on the deck.

Before you begin FF, be sure that you have -3 to -4 at the bottom of your normal curve to make descents easier, especially if you have a headwind.

when i went from 1/2 to 3/4 hover it took less than 1 tank to learn and it actually feels more comfortable to me that way.

on all three curves i have half stick set at 0 degrees so when i switch to idle up 1 and 2 it doesn't take off.

definately have some neg. in ff ,with any wind it could be hard to bring back down.
