I read something a while back about the "hockey stick" of 900 years of global warming data. Two scientists put it together using several different indicators of temperatures over the years. Basically it showed a sharp increase in temperatures starting at 1900. This hockey stick report was one of the major causes of global warming "awareness" if i remember correctly.

But 2 OTHER people showed errors in the original statistical analysis, and when they completed their analysis, no such warming trend was observed. The issue is still hotly contested today who is right.

I think there is a LOT of BAD SCIENCE flying around in regards to the global warming issue. I can't find the website though, it had a great write up on the whole mess.

I haven't seen the movie, but heard its got some ridiculous "save the earth" speech/moral thing at the end of it. I won't be seeing it.

I saw it, and yes it certainly does have the "we must do our part to save the precious earth" speech at the end.

I personally found it very enjoyable until people started getting rescued and everybody got preachy. One of the most amusing moments was, "....in an ironic turn of events, thousands of Americans are illegally crossing the border into Mexico." I personally go to diaster flicks to see the diasters, not to see the human spirit triumph or some crap like that. I want to see huge CG created catastrophes.

My view is less narrow

While I do believe that what we put into the air can affect weather patterns, much like a large wildfire or volcano, I don't believe our 200 years of industrial use of the earth is enough of an indicator when the earth functions in 1000's of years for trends. I go even farther to say I don't really care if it is all true. As far as man is concerned we will do our self in way before the greenhouse could be an issue if it is one. In our universe the earth is rather young in terms and will take care of itself. In the long run the presence of man and what we do to the earth will be the equivilent of a passing flu. The earth will kill everyone off if necessary and who knows what will grow next. People would say I am not being fare to future generations but how many generations should we look out for. Everyone knows the sun will die in a few billion years and without enough mass to collapse into a supernova will become a red giant and swallow the earth no questions asked. So what is the weather forecast for the year 22,000,000,000.....sunny at 5000 degrees Kelvin. Ok I am done I need to use the soapbox for laundry before the wife catches me standing on it.

actually, in 2.5 billion years or so, the milky way galaxy is due to cross paths with the andromeda galaxy. who knows what will happen then but i bet it would make 1 great movie, using some fancy high tech bomb to divert the course of the galaxy and sending a bunch of 10000 year old astronauts to plant it and then they fight about who gets to set off the bomb and end up dropping the key in their celebratory pizza and have to wait for it to pass and by then its too late and will smith's clone flies by in a spaceship and creates a wormhole the andromeda galaxy enters and the world is saved once again..

The idiot greenies just cant believe that there is nothing that can be done on the whole as the earth suposely warms up.. I live her in WA state and I watch Mt St Helens put more crap into the atmosphere in an hr than all the cars and SUVs inthe northwest including all the so called poluting buisnessesput toget in their entire life span .. For all their good and wrong intentions ,one idiot in Cal started a grass fire and did the same thing ..Greenies in the world are just not to informed or we as a whole are stupid for letting them lead us around and kill this country gradually by their sudo crapI do agree that some things man does isnt the brightest thing ,but that isnt going to kill the earth although it might kill the locals in the area .. That alone should be their aim .. If a mill is pouring toxic chemicals in a river then all that will do is kill anyone around it in the long run ,but not the earth .. The earth will take care of itself ...Nothing we can do will have a bearing on that .. Mt St helens alone killed all the fish in 2 rivers for a decade and it still hasnt came back totally ..I watched the the biggest timber corperation in the world cut as many trees as the could for 30 yrs now and there are more trees now than there was before Mt st Helens blew in the same area .. Onlywhere the so called Envionmelists got their hooks into is still exactly as it was after the St Helens blew .. Another look at the greenies idiotcy is Yellowstone Park .. After the big fire there that the greenies didnt want to put out killed every animal in the park that couldnt get away from it .. the same thing here in Oregon after the biggest forest fire in history was caused by the greenies not allowing logging before it ..Now they still want all those resouces wasted just for the benefit of bugs .. I always wonder what their houses are made of .. Also I wonder how much toilet paper these idiots use in a year and if they know what their toilet paper is made from...

The Eearth has survived almost total devastation a number of times. All you have to do is look at the moon. The impact that created it nearly destroyed the Earth, but it recovered. The Earth will survive us and all of our problems. The question is, will we?

There are always 2 sides to every argument.

Shortly after R12 was banned, Los Alamos conducted a study in which they wanted to find verify the real damage created by it's release. What they found was, it takes almost 500 years for R12 to make it to the ozone layer. At that rate, the real damage of CFC's will not be known in our life time. The big but is, why cause damage when we don't have to? We have the means to circumvent our addition to the problem so, why not use them? The L.A.L. report was never released to the GP.

As far as pollution goes, global warming is a real problem. It will affect this planet. Look at Venus for an example of global warming gone mad. For us, smog, and urban pollution is the bigger problem. It can cause severe health problems in some individuals.

You have the greenies, and the anti-greenies. All make some good points. But consider this, look in any direction, any. Tell me if there is anywhere you can see that has not been touched by man in some way. If we can't control ourselves, at some point, mother nature will do it for us.

For my personal views, I love my gas chugging V-8's!

We could have an all out nuclear war that completely wipes out every life form larger than an a cockroach and in time (millions of years perhaps) the earth will recover and a new dominant life form will emerge.

With that in mind the question is that of, the earth may survive just fine with whatever we may do to it, but will we be able to continue to survive on it with what we're doing to it?

As with most issues there is either extreme which makes things unpleasant for everyone, and then there's the middle ground where common sense usually prevails.

One thing I will add about dam building. It's not as simple as it appears with regard to environmental impact as some would think. The Grand Canyon is a good example. Since the Colorado River has been dammed four out of eight species of fish native to the river have gone extinct because the water temperature that used to reach 80 F now averages only 42 F. The river used to carry 500,000 tons of sand and silk downstream per day. Of 180 beaches suitable for camping only 90 are left due to errossion. Instead of sand being deposited in the canyon during flash floods (which even though they tried to replicate them, didn't have the desired effect) it drops out of suspension in Lake Powell. This has all happened since the Glenn Canyon Dam was completed in 1963.

What will be interesting is the inversion of the Earth's electromagnetic field. They are saying it will happen within the next several years. Possibly within the next 25-50. They say that signs are already indicating it is in process. Last time it happened was several thousand years BC.

When that happens, magnetic north will be south, south will be north, etc. North America would essentially become South America.

Some say that during the inversion process, we will bake because of the fields inability to deflect solar particles. It could be a micro extinction.

That's something we have no control over and could not cause, or stop.

Bloomin hell S-Owen, you should have signed up for the creative director in that film. Its comments like yours that the greenies love, The Earths magnetic field has been thought to have reveresed in the past, perhaps sevral times in fact. But the past and several times relates to a billion year period and each reverse was estimated to take around 1,000 years. There is also no way to predict these events, hell we are still trying to work out how the earths magnetic field actually works and how it has manged to regenrate itself for such a long period of time, theoretically it should have wound down about 500 million years ago.
The main factor effecting the shift in polls is thought to be lava flows at the earths core, these flows can have the effect of pulling the current in the opposite direction if volcanic actvity shifts the flow signifacantly. But as volcanic venting has greatly reduced in the past 50 million years we should not expect to see poll changes in the next few million years.
Again this is a case of some dum reporter reading a report produced by Los Alamos, probaly Gary Glatzmaier who discovered these events, and trying to make a scare story that we are all doomend and this is going to happen next week.
I feel another Hollywood movie and green campiagn coming on.

Good point serious sam

This is a testament to the lies and fraud constructed by the green movement as turned into a big green frankenstein, they have fooled so many ordinary people, green lies now sell products like sex sells products and those they despise use it as a tool.

Capatilists see it as the next best thing to sex for selling their goods and services.
They discovered that they can make totally outragious enviro claims and are beleived, or failing that just quote some rabbid tree hugging professor.
More profitable than testimonials, naked women dont appeal to the females where as green lies appeal to both sexes.
They can claim they are helping to save the earth too.
Win win for corporations selling poxy wares and kitchen condements..

Even if the greenies all came out tommorow and stated it was all a hoax or they all got it wrong, it would be too late to stop the green plague.

I ponder occasionaly as to what will be the end of the green lies.
Its a given that this kind of hoax cant last more than a generation or two.

Will the whole thing self implode or choke on its own vapour ?, it seems to me there has been enough startling occurences that show the enronmentalism as a hoax but that hasnt phased any of them so I doubt it will be any singular corse of events that will be the end of it all.

I predict it to occur in the reverse order of the way it started, the domino effect of scientists.
When a number of them reverse their claims, come out and decry environmantalism, others will follow like dominos.

We need a host of anti david suzuki enangelists in the science community.

Reversing magnetic poles

I read somewhere recently that a new thought on what causes the magnetic fields and which has gained a large following amoungst the scientific community is that the Earths core is not a molten ball of iron. The new theory is that it is molten uranium. Apparently this has provided for a better explanation of the cause, effects and changes to our magnetic fields.

Why are we here? Why does life exist at all?
When you consider that so called facts. The Universe is expanding at a greater speed every day and at some point in time it will either run out of mass/gravity to hold it together.. We and all life in the universe is doomed.

The first major hurdle we have is surviving each other. Then we have to survive the loss of the sun and probably the Earth in the same instant. Then the loss of the Milky Way.

We have to alot of technology we need to find/discover/make.
At present there is not enough matter on this planet to get us to the nearest star using current technology. What are we going to need to leave this galaxy?

"It's life Jim but not as we know it" I'd love to be able to say that one day. Maybe my great great grandchildren might have to opportunity.

Some of you guys need to get out and fly your helicopters a bit more.

I only visit the off topics occasionally, because I invariably saddened to find I'm sharing a hobby with a bunch of freakin head cases, who enjoy screwing the planet or who wish to nuke their fellow inhabitants.

Some of the huge convoluted posts that are generated sound like the rantings of complete nutters.

So bitter, so twisted, what are they putting in your burgers these days dudes.
