After 10-15 minutes of hovering/tweaking, my 3s lipo 11.1v 830 mah measures 150F. Towerhobbies.com posts 140F as a cut off. I may have to go down to a 9T pinion, or exclusively 1200mah 3s lipos.

What types of temps have you guys been getting?

If you get the packs to hot they will swell up and could catch fire.
I have an old ET1200 3s pack that I use and it runs about 120-125F.

It’s best to use some of the newer technology LiPo’s that have much lower internal resistance and a high “C” rating (10+). These new cells run much cooler and will give you more power. The new TP Gen 2 batteries are excellent. TE also has some new cells that are suppose to be good but not as good as TP. I like the TP1350 3s packs – lots of flight time and power.

Zoom, that seems hot. How many amps are you drawing?

What is the ambient temperature also? My packs ( Apogee830) are usually reasonably warm also. Often warmer than the motor. But it is winter here and the batt temp wouldn't be more than 100F if I had to guess. I haven't got a temp gun, only a probe. Not sure the batterys would appreciate a probing! 8-)

I do a static amp draw test with new setups to make sure I am not pulling too many amps. If the amps are within spec then the batt shouldn't over heat.

10-15 is a long flight though. I only get 10 on my CP hummer, and that pulls no more than 6 amps with DD tail. I would guess you are pulling around 3-4 amps.

Just a tip, I noticed you are using JST connectors, like many. I was too until a couple days ago. They are rated to only 3 amps and don't last very long at all. Mine were warm after flying. I changed to mini deans and imediately noticed an improvement in performance, by a good 20% or so. Might be worth a try.

Actually guys my system is drawing 10.3 amps

I would not have believed it had it been for this amp meter. Now I see why my TP 830 pack was running 150F. Its max discharge rating is only 5.8amp at 7C. This amount of current is also above what my E-tec 3s 1200 pack can handle @ 7.5C totalling 9amps.

D@mn, the only pack I will safely be able to run is the TP1320 @10-12C.

Wow, that would be it!! hehe

Can I suggest you try a pack of apogee or equiv 830 3S. Mine are great and can handle 10.5C continuous. Only 60g too.

That would be better than my 830s, but it would still

put at only 8.7amps max. I still may have issues.I may have to get rid of the 30 mm music wire flybar (which I hate) I was experimenting with and get a better quality 2mm carbor fiber flybar as well as mount the CF blades and see if I draw less current. I'll keep playing with it.

I just don't want to end up like this guy's experiment:

Basically, I place the heli in idle up mode, cranked up full speed 10T pinion ~3000 rpm on the floor at -11 to -12 degree pitch. This gives me the most extremely condition that the heli will ever face in the air ( atleast with me flying it). Of course, the amp ratings increased from about 8A to 10.3A as I went from 55% at 0 degrees to 100% thr at -11 or - 12 pitch.

Correction

I just run my 830 in parallel and the new discharge is 14C, 1660 mah 11.1v and the Amp meter read 12.1 amps with the same procedure above.

How much can that Phoenix 10 ESC really take?

Hi Zoom, The CC10 will take that, but not all the time. But in flight you wouldn't be pulling that very often.

Did some static tests with my CP this morning. Most I pull with just the main motor is 8.5-9 amps. But my DD tail will pull up to 4 amps on its own! I still condsider this acceptable.

Jamie
