This has happened twice, each time during the 2nd flight of the day. My tail rotor servo stops dead in its tracks. First flight is uneventful.

Thought maybe I had a loose connector the first time, but after it quit the 2nd time I thought it was time to back up and regroup. I've been very lucky both times to get the Vigor CS down without any damage. It does make for interesting landing techniques, though.

I think something in the servo electronics is heating up and only gets warm enough after a couple of flights to give any problems. The servo is going back to JR tomorow. Anyone have any thoughts?

From what you descirbe I think it has to be a vibration related failure?

You may be unlucky and it is in fact a batch of faulty servos but two might be more than a co-incidence.

You have to go through the obvious - get the heli super smooth, fuel tank flat calm, no shakes, servo's mounted properly on the rubber grommets with no contact on the sideframes etc?

Yep, I think you are doing right. Send that sucker back, it's broken.

Just a thought, but what about the gyro ?
It's the gyro's job to drive the tail servo isn't it ?

Yes, I have worried about the gyro. It could be the problem rather than the servo. Since it's one level up in the "chain of command" so to speak, I plan to prove/disprove the servo issue first. If the servo turns out good, I'll look at the gyro.

Thanks for the thought.

The 8231 isn't designed to act as a tail servo, its too slow ! And as you say, it could well be the motor overheating and seizing up.

Ideally you should be running the 8700 servo

My 8700 will be here Thursday from Heliproz. I ordered it Monday. The 8231 goes back to JR as soon as the 8700 gets here.

I have been using the 8231 for almost two years on the tail servo with no problems until now. I feel you are correct about the motor overheating. It works OK after waiting about 15 minutes.
