› Shortened tail boom with DD tail?

I just installed my DD tail motor from Stevens Aeromodel. Now the problem I am having is that the tail is too heavy. It starts to lift off as if the tail is glued to the ground. I moved my 240 gyro to the front and my birdseed all the way up to no avail. Can I shorten the tail boom, or will the tail rotor then not have enough leverage? I'm switching to Li-pos this week which will probably make this worse.

The problem is that shortening the tail boom won't have much effect on balance. The DD tail is nearly twice the weight of the stock tail. The stock tail rotor is about 15 inches from the mast. To maintain the same ballance with the DD tail, you would have to cut nearly 7 inches off the boom. I haven't calculated the moments exactly, but each inch you cut off the tail boom probably has less effect than moving the battery forward 1/10 inch. A lot of people with the DD tail glue the mounting bar for the canopy closer to the mast so they can move the canopy and batteries farther forward.

I wouldn't recommed shortening the boom. I had to shorten the boom when I changed to a DD motor as the stock tail motor bracket would not come unglued and had to be cut off.

I took off about 1 1/2" and although it flew okay, you lost a lot of tail authority and my flight times went down as the DD tail motor had to work harder (due to reduced leverage/moment arm) to hold the tail steady.
