Sorry, I'm not Mr. Harkey, but...

What happened to close the field? Is it a situation that other club fields need to be aware of/looking out for?

Sold

It seems the McCalla field property was sold and since there was no formal lease, just a handshake deal, the new owner asked that they vacate post haste. It's a shame, as it was a nice field to fly on.

Thanks for the reply.

Fortunately, our club's safe from that problem: the lease is $1/year - and the owner doesn't even bother collecting!!

Might want to make it a point to actually pay that lease, silly as that sounds.

From what I understand the owner of the field passed away a while back. The land was in a trust fund and all the legallities have been taken care of. The land is now up for sale and they do not want to have any liabillities what so ever. We are in the process of looking for a new place. Hopefully soon. It was a convenient field for me. 30 min from home, 10 min from work. I guess those lunchtime flights are over for a while.

Everyone:

I talked to Jhon Russell yesterday and he told me that the competition for the 14-15th has been moved to the Bessemer R/C field (??) near Hueytown just off Warrior Road. After that is anyone's guess. He also said that Kurt and someone else was looking for another field in the area. It looks like the only game in town immediately will be Leeds, Pelham or the Met in Hoover (if you're willing to take the chance w/ freq interferrence). Bummer

Jhon sent me a map to the Bessemer R/C field that I'll pass along if you get me your e-mail address.

As far as I know the land is for sale. The McCalla field is in a high growth area. I think purchasing is out of the question. $$$$

The club I am referring to is a shooting(not hunting) club. Cost for the land was about $900,000. Dues are $350 per year per person. We have about 300 members.

I don't know what the real price of the land is where the flying field is located, but what about a hypothetical?

$100,000 for the land? $20,000 down and one or two people would have to guarantee the note. Payments would probably be about $700 per month with taxes included.

How many club members can a club have or keep if the dues are close to $200 per year? I know I would pay that to have a convienient club location, but others may disagree.

Just some thoughts for the sake of conversation.

I would think the price is going to be 20 to 30 times that for the whole thing. I think there is over 100 acres. We dont need the whole thing but we do use the best part of it. Road front with all the industrial parks popping up. Gotta be pricey. If I had all the money I spent on helicopters I might be able to afford it!!!! We are supposed to go look at a couple sites this week. Keep your fingers crossed. Hopefully Dave will be back in town soon. He may know how much land is for sale and how much.

Another thing that began to look obvious to the field being sold is development.
We had a number of warehouses closing in on us and that probably prompted the owner to have visions of $$$ floating around in their head (although there are quite a few plots of land around there for the picking).
Was a great field. Will be missed...

Dan/Don/Kirk/David/Terry, let's mortgage our houses and buy the place! We could build a flight line on the South side and not have to look into the Sun in the afternoon!

God invented time so we don't have to do everything at once!

Might be worth seeing how much it is at least. Maybe you could build a field on the back half and lease/sell out the front part????

I got some info from Dave over the weekend. When the owner of the property passed on he left the land to his grandchildren. Until the grand children are of legal age (21), they can not do anything with the land. Until this time the land is in a trust. There is a group of lawers in charge of this trust and their job is to protect the trust and make sure that they cannot be sued for any reason. That is why we were asked to leave.
