hi all

I have new extreme with only 4 gallons thru it and tail gears striped out .and also caused a crash.i took the heli to huntsville last weekend and had someone there set it up and dave harky flew it and said it seems fine.3 days later it hits the ground.

I am still a rookie and have not done anything to cause this I don't think. also built it per the manual and took my time,so I don't understand. thanks for any help or info.

A friend almost had the same thing happen this weekend to his new Fury Extreme but when I inspected the tail gear box there was end play in the output shaft. Apparently during assembly he put the input shaft in the box as he was adjusting the gear position on the output shaft. There was very little backlash in the gears as the input shaft made proper contact but the output shaft gear was not in the correct position. Once the gears started to wear the end play in the output shaft was noticeable. Because the output shaft moved the gears would eventually wear off more and strip out.

Its hard to say why your failure occurred but the assembly of the minair tails needs to be exact. I physically check my tail box every time I go to the field. When I remove the main gear to re-oil I take the tail apart to see the wear on the gears and look for problems. The newer gyros like the Futaba 401 and 601 are very demanding on the mechanics.

Go over the parts again and see if you can tell what failed other than the gears stripping. Did the gears move from where you first installed them? I red lock-tight the gears, spacer, and bearings to the shafts. Sometimes I lock-tight outer parts of the bearing in the tail box. Heat will break the lock-tight but its a pain.

The description of the tail assembly is very good.

Loctite the gears and bearings to the shafts. Set it up with no backlash but still smooth, it will break in. What grease are you using? I eventually settled on wheel bearing grease for real cars and never again had a problem. Cheap grease like what's sold for R/C cars can actually crystalize from the heat and become abrasive, guess how I know?

well thanks to all who replyed

I guess I can take 50% credit for the failure of gear box and crash of my new extreme.after next daying the gear Box to bob and Tim at miniature aircraft,it seems as though I did not use enough grease. The manual says to concentrate the grease on the gears which is what I did.But it does not say how much to put in there,it just says a liberal amount. So I guess I was not liberal enough.I talked to Tim today and he says to fill to box 1/3 to 1-2 full.Comon sense should have told me to put more.I guess I'll know better next time.Even though it was half my fault,Tim was very nice to me and give me half price on all the parts. Those guys are the best down their and I will never fly anything but miniature aircraft again.I knew when I bought the kit it would be a awsome bird and it is,so my hat is off to those guys.By the way I was using a synthetic grease.thanks again guys.and thanks for the link
