Could someone describe a situation in which a brass washer would be preferable over a steel one? What are the characteristics of brass? Does it corrode easily?

brass is a softer metal than steel. if you are talking about stainless steel there would be a greater advantage over oxidising (sp?) but plain steel is still harder than brass. if you are referring to the little washers that goes against the bearings for like the control arms and washout arms you will be better off using the brass ones.
they kind of give a lubricity to the contact of the surface that they are against where as steel will induce friction and drag compressing against the bearing.

Picture this situation...

A couple hot chicks are jogging by the field and spot two Raptors sitting on the table. They've never seen an RC helicopter so they stop to have a look. Now one of the birds has a shiny brass washer under each of the frame screws. The babes immediately spot the bling and become attracted to it. "Is this your toy helicopter?" they ask. "It's way cool". "No, mine is the other one", pointing to the stock ship. "Well I'd sure like to meet the guy that flies this one, it's awesome and I'd so love to touch it." the redhead adds with a squeeky voice. "My boyfriend is such a dud, all he does is play on his computer". The blond now has a blank gaze as she runs her fingers along the boom. "I need a boy with one of these to play with".

And that's why we have the brass washers. And no, they don't corrode too bad.
