the nut tightens down onto the shaft, and does turn the engine over, but there is a cap which goes onto the purple block part shown in the pic, which the starter goes into, it seems like the locking nut should go further down to lock the puple starter block, and so the engine can turn over, but it doesnt, and hence the problem.

So, if i am understanding this correctly, with it installed the way you have it now, the long nut does not lock the fan in place allowing you to place the starter dome on the top of the purple housing?
Can you move the purple housing up and down with the long nut installed?

Hi Andy

You need to check that the Clutch collet 64/5 is as far down as it can go before you fit the Clutch If this collet is high and you fit the clutch the taper will lock it in place were it is and nothing will make it fit.

Sounds like you are missing a washer somewhere. The first item on the crank should be a thrust washer, then the clutch bell, collect, clutch, fan, and purple adapter. If you look down into the adapter, you should only see motor threads. If you see part of the smooth crank, it is not installed properly.
