the piston has a pin hole in it so that I know is gone but the sleeve looks fine except for this gouge near the exhaust port. should I try and salvage this sleeve or just get a new one.
How about know. I tried to get a better pic

Hmmmm....

I can't really tell from the picture.. You have enough light.. On these up close pics with a digital camera, try finding a couple of books or something to rest the camera and or your hand on.. Then make sure to MANUALLY focus, as the auto focus usually doesn't work too well up close..

Sure you can use it. It may be a little down on power because of the reduced compression. Use some 400 wet paper and "hone" the cylinder to remove any high spots and any "glaze" on the walls. Never sand up and down, always around the circumference. It should run at 90 to 95% of perfect...if you are OK with 90 to 95%.
