Now before anyone flames me for ruining a wonderful 3d-capable heli with its awsome geared, variable pitch tail, has anyone actually done this?

A guy in the HB forum apparently did this to his Zoom 400 with some success (it flies at least!). Just got me to thinking of easy ways to avoid dealing with my arch nemesis, the H2 tail. Run away!

the hornet 2 tail is extremely better than the first hornets tail...I have no upgrades in my hornet 2's tail and it holds really well. The only thing you need to have is a high head speed...like 2500. if you have it around the 2000 range, the tail holds like crap. The electric motor for the tail to me seems bad, since you dont know when it will fail...plus it is more wieght.

From my point of view the hornet 2 tail is great as is, if you want to make it a little better just put the servo on the fin with some double sided tape.

If you put a a tail motor on a Hornet II you'll be the only one the the march band marching step. Good luck!

pbmax - it will work of course. I flew a flbless Hornet CP with an GWS EDF-50H ducted fan tail tied to a TREC programmable ESC and a Gy-401 and had tons of fun with it. Don't tell anyone on the Hornet BBS
