I have not used coolpower fuel before, but am now running 15% in my OS 50sxh. I am suprised to find that the idle needle has to be fully closed i.e. lean, in order to get the engine to idle and even then the idle seems too rich. Engine runs fine and does not stop in the air but the engine is not happy to sit and idle, and when cold you have to advance the throttle painfully slowly to get it to pick up without stopping before you can engage the governor. Is this normal for coolpower ? advice would be appreciated.

Best wishes

Paul .

No this is not normal, it should not be even close to the closed position.
What plug are you using ?
Pipe/exhaust?
and what is your main needle setting ??
my Idle needle was about few degrees off vertical.

Slot in screw is near vertical, so mid position.

I am using OS 8 plugs, and the Hirobo exhaust which is quiet but does cut down power I know. This is in a Scedeau which is my practice Heli. If I open the carb screw at all the engine pees fuel out of the exhaust when starting and clearly floods ? never seen this before, main needle setting is about 3/4 turn open, not fully leaned yet but not far off perhaps only a couple of clicks off lean, as a new 50 and running in. Faultless in flight but poor idle !!.

I have an OS 70sxh running on Model Technics Yamada 20 fuel which has perfect carburation and runs great.

If I were to put the carb screw anywhere near the centre it would not even start. Baffled. !!!

Thanks for your interest

Paul.

seems all have their carb screw at least near the centre, certainly nowhere near where mine is !!,

Going to try today with the headloaders and lean the top end fully out to see what effect that has to the transition and idle.

I am told coolpower does run leaner on the needles than other fuels, is this true ?

thanks for your help will tell you the results of todays efforts.

Best wishes

Paul.

With the carb closed, the main needle will have no effect at all on the idle mixture. If it will not idle good with the idle needle closed i would look elseware for the problem and not the main needle valve setting. DOUG

Todays frustrations

OK, played today and spoke to Irvine's. Irvines said "Coolpower has too little oil and is no good for OS so is running hot, therefore will not be able to get idle rich enough, ( I tried to explain I had opposite problem to no avail !!), silencer pressure is too great for carb, use Irvine contest 10%.

Well, testing reveals silencer pressure make no difference to engine at all, change of fuel makes no difference at all still idle is too rich.

Andy at Model & Hobby World Lancaster, is very helpful and is sending me a new carb as we now suspect the carb is not working properly.

Pain in the ass !!!.

Best wishes

Paul.

I thought that too but thought i was being cynical. will let you know what a new carb does.

In the meantime have bought an x cell gas graphite to play with, always fancied a gas heli.

best wishes

SOLVED

Thanks to all who posted the problem is solved the carburettor was defective, I have fitted a new carb today and the engine idles beautifully with the idel screw at centre and is happy to sit and idle and picks up instantly.

Examination of my original carb shows that even with the idle screw fully home, the metal u shaped operating piece for the idle mixture was not as closed as a good carb with the screw at centre.

OS are not inaffalible after all !!!!

Now back to the field.

Best wishes

Paul.
