hey iam pretty new when it comes to helicopter receivers and crystal. I just wanted to ask..... if i get a JR 8103 with a module with a channel 31 on it and i have a Mr. carbon "berg" receiver on channel 13. Would this work? or do i have to buy a crystal conversion. How does the crystal and channel thing work? thanks

Sorry, but unless the 31 and 13 are typing errors (and they're really both the same), then you're out of luck. Think of it as like a TV, the receiver must be tuned to the right channel to receive the right picture (or fly the model).

The crystal in the receiver determines which channel it receives, so to make the receiver work with your transmitter on 31, you need a receiver crystal for channel 31 too. Berg uses a "single conversion" (as you're new, dont bother about what this actualy means for now...), so you need to make sure you get the right type of crystal. Many receivers (most Futaba & Hitec) are "dual conversion", and the crystals for these wont work in your Berg.

Once they're both set to the same channel the JR8103 should work just fine with a Berg (you didnt say exactky which Berg you have), I think all of the current Berg receivers are compatible with JR transmitters.

I have the Mr carbon "berg" 5 with DSP. I just ordered a BERG crystal for chan 31. I hope this will work. How would the frequency from the module match the one on the rx? when i ordered it, it only ask me what chan i wanted.

The radio frequency used by the transmitter is given a channel number for convenience. Its much easier to say "channel 31", rather than saying "72.430 MHz"- its actually the same thing, but most modellers only know the channel numbers! (Just like TV channels!) I used a table at http://home.flash.net/~dynamic3/sig/003.htm so that I could look up the frequency that corresponds to channel 31 in the US. Channel numbers are the same throughout all of the US, but are different in (for example) Europe. (So this means that channel numbers are the same between say JR and Hitec).

There is still one area where the radio signal can be incompatible between different brands of equipment. This is called the "shift" direction. The Berg 5 has a switch for this, so you've nothing to worry about here, but you may need to set the switch to the proper position for JR. You may need to watch this in the future if you buy another receiver as not all receivers are able to handle the shift direction used by JR eg most (all??) Futaba receivers dont.

I've heard good things about Berg's DSP receivers. They should be a very good match to your JR8103 in any heli- in fact I was already planning to try one in my next project. (I'm trying to decide if that will be a Piccolo pro, Hornet II, Hummingbird CP or Zoom).

There is good detail about the Berg 5 DSP at http://www.classicaero.com/berg/berg5dsp.shtml

so theres only one frequency for one channel? I found the swtich on the berg receiver, its microscopic! Well...thanks for the great adive. I had the same question u had last month, wheher to get a Piccolo, hornet, or Zoom. They are all great but i didnt like the fact that the piccolo had a motor for the tail. Both the hornet and zoom have tail servos but the H2 is mostly carbon fiber, and everyone likes carbon fiber.
