CLEANING

I find the vaule brand oven cleaner works a whole lot better than the easy off cleaner and a lot cheaper.Really works well. The cheapest one at the dollar store works the best.

Does anyone know what works to coat the areas that you do not want the anodize removed, such as bearing seats? I see one person recommends bees wax, would heavy grease work?

cheap bead blasting

harbour freight has a hand held mini "spot" blaster for about 14 dollars. get that and on your way home get about 5 or 6 boxes of baking soda and have at it. a light coat of semi gloss fuelproof clear will top the job off nicely.

You can also go to Caswell and get a spray-on masking product that you just spray through a cheap, disposable $5 airbrush, use a razor blade to trim around the area you want to protect and peel off the excess. I use it frequently for airbrushing, powdercoating, anodizing and light blasting.

Wow. I didn't think anyone would resurrect this post from ages ago. Thanks for your help Gents. I used lye (which worked quickly) and at other times Oven Cleaner to remove the anodising. I quickly found that if you leave the aluminum parts in the lye too long you have essentially lost them.

for the greased lightning method, if you put it in a pan and heat it up to bout 50 degree F it will speed up the the de-deanodizing process. i did the swashplate from my trex 600 in about 10 min. have had bout 60 flights on since then with no problems.

i have done tailbooms with over cleaner plenty of times, pop the part in the over (set at about 250 F), let it sit in there for a good 10-15 minutes, then remove it and then spray the over cleaner and let it sit for a few and that has always been the best for me. i would never remove anodizing from anything else though, especially of the part takes bearings because removing the coating opens more tolerance.

OK so I decided to strip the Anodizing off my TRex 700 head and left the parts in Easy off for several hours. Now it's It looks like the head has been pock marked. It looks as though there has been some aluminum (from the anodizing I guess) that has clumped up on top of the original head pieces.

My question is:
Is my head FUBAR (F*&$ed Up Beyond All Recognition) or is it salvagable?

I have tried to sand down some of the excess aluminum (on the head button) and it seems to be working better.

I just wanted to know what I'm looking at. I'm good with wood working but with metals, I'm a newbie.

Do you have any pics? From what I have read the aluminum that Align uses does not have much resistance to anodizing removal chemicals

i would say that by soaking it in the oven cleaner for a couple of hours is the likely cause for the damage... that stuff works much better if you heat the parts up first, then spray it and leave it on for no more then 15-20 minutes at a time. align doesnt use billet aluminum for their parts, they cast the parts then finish cnc them, so the chemical makeup of the parts are slightly different then that of a parts being made from a solid piece of billet.

the pots are from the lye being left on too long. you can sand the parts down to get rid of most of them and buffing them with gradual steps of the right compounds can pull the rest out, but im not so sure i would trust the head now, but thats my opinion

ive done parts plenty of times going the oven cleaner route and always heat the part in the over first at 300 degrees for 15 minutes, pull it out and then spray it with the cleaner and let it set for 15 minutes, then rinse and repeat (if necessary)

I've just used oven cleaner on a T-rex 450 Micro Heli Tail Box and it takes a few minuets, put some in a container just big enough for the part you are stripping and then tie some thread to the part and drop it in, as soon as the cleaner starts to turn the colour of the part pull it out and finish it with a tooth brush, don’t forget to use rubber gloves if you leave it too long the alloy will go dull.

You left it in there for HOURS which was a No No. Next time use some Drano and leave it in there for a couple of minutes, agitate the mix or stir it. Wash it off with cold water immediately after. The Easy-Off and even Drano will pit and kill anything if you leave them in there for hours.
