My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I am sure many of you have had aluminum parts that came anodised BLUE or PURPLE. I want to remove it but I don't want to "sand" off the anodised finish. Do any of you have any quick ways to get if off such as chemicals etc.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Use some Lye. Be very careful. It wipes off. Use some warmer water for more cleaning action. After you take the anodizing off it will oxidize, so be aware.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Find a machine shop that has a bead blaster. This is a sandblaster that uses glass beads instead of sand. Takes almost any sort of finish off any sort of metal lickety-split, with NO damage or alteration of the part.

Leaves the part with a pleasing frosted look. However, as was mentioned above, if the base metal is not some sort of stainless alloy, it will begin oxidizing immediately; including aluminum.

Clear-coating will solve that.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		All these ideas are pretty good. I do have the wire brushes for my Dremel and several types of abrasive fibre and brush wheels that also give a satin jewel like finish. I got those from a jewelry tool making company near the diamond district. The problem with those things (I have done it) is that it takes a little too much time and the dust is terrible. The Easy-Off sounds pretty good. Now wait...Lye...hmm...Cadwell won't that stain the aluminum? Steve the bead blaster idea is EXCELLENT. Dremel also makes a bead blaster (etches glass too).... but I don't want to go that route because then I would have to shlep to a shop. I just wish I had one myself.

Well Gents this has been a great start. Thank you and hopefully I will get some more good ideas. I will of course try the easiest ones.

This stuff will take the black off an 8 ball..LOL
Best stuff you can use ,not as much damage to parts.
You can polish with your dremal ( use mothers mag polish ) from a parts store .
Oh and best part is no bad fumes ,non-toxic, bio-degradable.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Thanks Zar. I have never tried Greased Lightning. I have some more parts to "de-coat" so I may try that down the road.

I did try the Easy-Off and that was a bust. It really didn't do much. I guess this is industrial anodising! The LYE worked terribly well. Even outside the fumes were horrible. It turned the parts a dull grey and I still had to go back and use my steel wire bit for my Dremel to get a nice satin finish. This process was time consuming but I believe that it may have been the quickest method by far.

Thanks Fellas. If you guys have any more I am always open to ideas!

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		Make sure that you rinse tha part in water after you use the easy-off. It is supposed to start eating into the metal if you dont. I read that the part can actually start smoking.

My Posts This: Topic  Forum		I have always used easy-off to remove anodize. The key is to get the spray can/arisol type, apply it liberally and leave it on for a while. It will foam and bubble. Use gloves as the easy off will also strip the prints from your fingers.

Now I will say that it has been a while since I stripped anodize.. A while being 19 years or more. I used to use easy off to strip the anodize from my BMX cranks. Since then the EPA has tightened the polution laws and as such, todays Easy-Off oven cleaner may not be as powerful as the old stuff. You know what they say.. "They don't make it like they used to"..

Another thing to try would be a bench grinder with a polishing pad in cunjunction with a good polishing bar for soft metals. This is somthing you may want to try even after a good stripping.
As CNSheets pointed out, clearcoat afterwards to preserve the shine.
