However well your machine is maintained and checked, you can never eliminate the chance of it stopping to work midflight. Of course you lower the chance of that happening considerably by being very careful and responsible about maintenance. But the chance is still there, and it will hit again and again. Helis are booming, and great amounts of chances are the natural enemy of small probabilities. Everyone make sure that you keep your chances to a minimum and hope that it will never happen to you.

This was a sad event.

I might be nuts, but I do have a blanket nearby as a 'just-in-case' during test hops, after major maintenance, etc. It's saved me twice (but say goodbye to Mr. Clutch).

.

I might not be very good, but I'm fun to watch.

Condolescence

I do not know how to put this but I hope the boy will rest in peace and his family will move on.

We flyers know how dangerous it is but the non-flyers don't. If you bring a non-flyer to the field, it is your responsibilties to WATCH OUT for him.
Most of the time, it is NOT the pilot who get hurt. Tell the spectator to keep on eye on the heli up there and run ......

Be extremely careful when you are flying, more so when you are not.

I sincerely hope that the boy's family will get over this sad loss as soon as possible. Let's pray.

First, I doubt the family will ever get over this.

Second, I hope everybody thinks about this when they hound Tod, Jason, Curtis, or whoever the latest hot dog pilot is, to put on a down low, in your face demo flight. Bare in mind, their equipment is not exempt from having a failure either.

A few more of these and I'm sure you'll be watching the end of this hobby.

BE CAREFUL! Don't be the next story. We always complain how the plankers don't like us but they might have good cause for complaining if they are afraid to bring their kids.

Why do so many people think that the hobby will end if people get hurt or killed? Do you know how many people have been hurt and killed riding horses, motocycles, bicycles, skateboards, snow skiing, etc. They have not stopped these hobbies yet. So far this has proven to be a very safe hobby compaired to other hobbies out there.

This is a very sad event, we should all learn from it and try to prevent it from happening again.

Sad event, sobering event, even scary event....but is there a reason this thread is active once again, since the original post was made on MARCH 19th, 2004??? Nine, going on ten month's old news by now. This didn't happen recently.

Usually what happens is a new member joins, and searches on a topic.
Without looking at the dates and realizing it's old news, he posts a reply.

Then everyone who has joined since it was originally posted thinks it's new and has to add their .02 worth!!!

This type of post involving safety and children is highly suceptable to this. I expect to see it about once a year.
Also, since it's titled "Heli hit a boy in the head today" people think it happened today.

This is true, but how many people in your town/city ride bikes, skateboards or horses? probably a lot, so banning them wouldn't be feesible whereas it's easy to stop a dozen or so people flying heli's since this hobby isn't very popular yet, nobody would really care.

Drunk Monk,
and also, in the riding horses, motocycles, bicycles, skateboards, snow skiing, etc hobbies, the man that killed is the hobby man himself!!
but in RC hobbies like helis, the most people that killed is childrens and peoples the come to see some flights... not US, (the guys how holding the remotes!!!)

Think about that?! right?

I find it very weird that of all the places to go, the helis seem to always go to a person when something is messed up..

I'm mean of all the possible places it could go, why did it go after that poor kid??

It could have landed 1 foot either way and he only might have had bruises from flying parts.
