Usually houses and Real-estate are just off the roads in some areas.

How do you get a shot on the target house or houeses if there are streets and roads (ie: cars and people ) around in the area??

Hi Mark,

I had to turn down two jobs yesterday with a Realtor on commercial properties. They were both in dense traffic areas and electric wires etc. and one was right next to an airport. I am just starting out and it's hard to turn down any business. But I think it's going to be part of it. I feel I have to be selective and responsible in those selections. So I told him straight up that I couldn't do those, and he called me back later and has two different properties out in more rural areas that I will shoot Saturday. Some of it will just be educating your Realtors on what you may or may not do. Some of the more experienced guys might have a different spin, because of theuir confidence levels, but that's how I see it for myself right now..

The answer is to DIVERSIFY!

I have a van that I transport the helicams in. It has a 40' telescopic aluminium mast that I have RotorKrafts G7 pan/tilt camera mount on it.

I got the mast from a local radio station that used it for remote antennas before cell phones.

This is the guy that is selling his gasser camera system on some forum.

www.propole.com

He has a neat idea but maybe too pricey. There are few others around but they cost as much as 2-3 helicam systems.

I understand... I feel a similar way actually if I was asked to do this ( I have not started the business yet ).

If someone has done some in close shoots by near the road with other houses and possible people, where do they setup and fly/land from, do you still scout an area for emergency auto landing point?

Another Question:....

Do you usually charge for a scout of a potential area? ---- check to see if its safe to fly there, safe landing / take off area, none or few wires etc.. etc....

What is the typical cost to potential client for a scout?

thanks.

Mark,

If I could get money for scouting an area out, then I would. More than likely you would be shooting yourself in the foot saying that I'll scout your area to see IF i can shoot your photos, and that'll cost ya.

Best way to handle that is have a deposit system. Where you say it will be so much up front and not refundable. And then somewhere have terms that say if it's unsafe you will not be able to shoot.

As far as the scouting goes, I look at it like this. I drive to my full time job every day and I don't get paid for that. If I call a carpet salesman, they will come out and give me a free estimate, with no obligation. So I handle my business the same way. Now that's for my local area. Plus I quiz the realtor on the phone and I have been able (so far) to decide whether or not I can do the job when I'm asking directions. If it sounds dicey, I tell him/her. But I will go check it out for no charge within a reasonable driving distance. . NOW, when the chopper hits the air the cash meter is going to roll..

I realize now, as I start dealing with my local realtors that a good portion of what they may want could be high density commercial (not suitable for the blessed helicopter), so then I would agree with Polariman. The customer won't care about HOW the job is done, as long as it is done to their needs..

great feedback.

That is the feedback I was looking for, great.

So, I too, now, think that scouting an area should be free. It seems like it will pay out in the long run this way.

thanks.

I use the job application form method. When I get an aerial/photo request I fax this form to the customer. I wait until get it back with all the necessary information. Such as=35mm/color/digital, location address, name and GSM of the location manager, responsible person's name/GSM number/position, payment terms aggreement authorized and signed by this person and etc. This piece of paper gives my job some level of legality. If I feel the flying area is risky I search until I find a no risk area and I have my client(or a rep) with me during the photo session. Or better, I ask them to get the necessary permissions. This method does not give me %100 protection but I feel it is better than not having any. I obviously don't force my luck with where I fly my heli (I think I don't).
Good luck
Ahmet

Mark,
HeliCek does not have insurance. I have my own aerial photography company. I am not registered or affiliated by the board either. I pay my share of income tax, social security and submit the VAT form every month. I try to avoid every risk when I work and I am most concerned not to get my head into trouble with the authorities. You know?
Cheers,
Ahmet
