Hi

I saw this post a while back over on Rotory and all credit goes to Hawk Eye Skycam.

As those of you who have tried the Eyetops know, the lense glass isn't up to much, and gets very frustrating at times as it has a ripple effect and when wearing them, a side movement of the head almost makes you feel sea sick

Anyway, Hawk Eye tried this out, I have just grabbed an old set of Oakleys I had out of the van and in 20 minutes sorted out the lense issue, plus you don't look as daft when wearing them.

If you have an old set laying around, or you want to try it, a set of replacement lenses is around $25 USD I think, either clear or tinted, I am used to flying with the Oakleys so it should be great.

I think for those guys on a budget with a single man operating setup who purely want to frame a shot better, the Eyetops come out pretty well.

Here's the post over on
Rotory

And here's how mine look now.

If you need a nice compact downlink bag, go no further than here

Now I hope I get the time to actually get out and take some pics as soon as the wind dies down.

Cheers

Lee

wow! stylish!

I've been wanting to ask you guys that use the Eyetops how you've been getting along. I've read past posts when you first started using them and just wondered now that some time has passed what do you think?

I sometimes have trouble dragging a cameraman along (or out of bed) and thought I could get a lot more done by setting up a second unit for solo use.

Two questions come to mind for me :

Are you distracted at all from flying? Is the picture good enough to see details of the subject matter or just good enough to frame your shot?

one more question.... do you want the video in front of your dominant eye or do you want your dominant eye for flying?

I use my eyetops to fly a fixed wing airplane, and I would say that I prefer the video over my dominant eye.

It's worth noting that the video does not cover the eye, it is set off to the side a bit, so you are able to focus both eyes on the aircraft. You actually have to glance over to see the video, and for me, it just feels more natural glancing over toward my dominant eye.

Coupled with my digi-live downlink (28 grams!) , I am able to get some pretty good pictures from my lowly little Soarstar electric airplane

thanks Bill, nice pics from the plane

What's strange for me is that even though I'm right-handed, I'm left eye dominent... isn't that wierd?

Let me know how you get on Lee. I tried this with my Oakleys (medium dark lens) but I found that there was insufficient brighness in the eyepiece compared with the sky. i.e. there was too little effective contrast ot be able to use the video downlink effectively.

3D, would you say your Oakley's were darker or lighter than the standard lense on the eyetop? Did you modify your Oakley's so the video screen was not obstructed by the sunglass lense?

I've found with the stock eyetop lenses that a baseball cap is really helpful when shooting mid-day, since the sun tends to get inside the glasses and wash everything out.

Hi Bill,

We did a test to see if the Oakleys would be useable with projection throught the Oakley lens. They were the mirrored type an I didn't want to modify them for aesthetic reasons

You're right about the hat! In the UK it tends to be woolly this time of year!

Hi John

Was that the CV range?? How's the heat ?? :-)

The Eyetops are slightly different in that the viewing screen is an integral part of the glasses, ie there is a slot you have to cut out in the lense to allow the viewing scren to fit in. I would say the Oakleys are darker that the stock lense, but a lot clearer allowing me to see the aircraft better.

daggit, the image you see is plenty good enough for framing a shot, there is a small amount of flicker to begin with, however after only a few moments I think your brain gets round this and once your flying its invisible.

Hopefully all being well I shall get out at the weekend with the Oakleys and get some results, but even on the ground, the picture quality is better and they are a lot more comfortable on the eye.
I too use it over my dominant eye as peer the instructions, you have to do a little test with your hands to find your dominant eye and they come left or right handed so make sure you order the right set.

Cheers
