Century Hawk - 50NX - Raven - Predator > Painting tupperware (Hawk Canopy) secret?

I have my Hawk Sport mostly assembled, now its time to start thinking of painting the Hawk canopy. I have heard the horror stories of trying to paint tupperware, so I decided some experimentation was in order. And sure enough, I think I found the secret ; flashing.

Some guys building SPAD airplanes out of coroplast (plastic carboard) will "flash" the plastic to remove the oils before glueing. Here are the details http://home.comcast.net/%7Etipstric...ip_flashing.htm
Basically a flame is run over the surface of the plastic to burn off all the oils. It only takes a second for it to work, but well worth it! Regular walmart spray paint now sticks like monkey dung. Untreated plastic allows the paint to peel right off. The quality of finish was also much better.

Kristopher,

This is very interesting. Please let us know how well your paint job holds up over a period of time.

And, I know a place where you can get a deal on a fire extinguisher!

Obviously its hard to say how well it will hold up the results are very promising. After letting the paint dry well I tried scraping it off the plastic. It peels off the untreated part, but will not from the treated part. Hopefully this week I can get the real canopy painted and start flying it a bit.

Kristopher,

Seriously, all joking aside, and I'm sorry about the fire extinguisher thing....just couldn't help myself, I've got some pieces of canopies, you know the part you cut out to put the windscreen in, and I'm going to experiment with this and see how it comes out.

I've used the Kylon Fusion paint with so so success. It seemed to stick pretty good except where the canopy would bend. I did use a good quality catalized automotive clear over the Fusion.

Steve-
No problem, I thought about recommending people a fire extinguisher myself. I also considered a warning about not wearing a trench coat while flashing, but that's another story...

I used the canopy opening scrap as a test piece, its probably a good idea for others to do that as well. The plastic will take an amazing amount of flame, but its best to not push it.

Do you ever get up in the Tulsa area? I am fairly new to heli flying, but hope to be wringing out the Hawk soon.

Kristopher,

I haven't been to Oklahoma in years. Was at a funfly just NorthEast of there once, at a field near Claremore, but like I say, it's been years. The closest I've been to OK recently is the funfly in Mt Pleasant, TX.

If you get a chance to make it, the Mt. Pleasant funfly is always a good one.

Just a quick aside... using a flame on plastic is not to burn oil, but is rather referred to as corona treating and can be done with an electric arc as well. What this actualy does, to the best of my knowledge, is to cause the molecules at the surface to stand up like hairs allowing the paint (or adhesive) to have a better mechanical bond. Also, to the best of my knowledge, this process will slowly reverse itself over time, so for best results paint within a day or so of doing this. If the plasic was heated near hot enough to burn oil, the plastic would melt or burn as well, so it's still important to remove oils with a solvent prior to painting.

Also, I would still recommend using a "plastic bumper primer" as a base for paint.

I spent too much time trying to figure out how to bond UHMH and this is one of the things that I researched.

Kristopher,

Well, it took me a while to get around to trying this, but I finally did it yesterday.

You are right. It sticks like never before. I took a piece of plastic that comes out of the windshield area, flashed one half of it, waited about 30 minutes, and painted the whole thing with some auto parts store spray can red. Checked it today and the unflashed side could easily be shattered and peeled with just a finger nail. The flashed side is stuck great. I tried all sorts of ways to get it to peel, and it will not.

I think this is great because I didn't sand, prime, or even use the paint for plastics. REVOLUTIONARY! Thanks for the tip.

Mine has been doing pretty well so far, the only issue I have found is where I missed a spot. I did not flash the very edge of the canopy because I was holding it there. Its chipped at that point, but everything else sticks great.

How do you think water base paints will hold on with this treatment?

I built some SPAD airplanes, and mineral spirits have helped plastic stick to plastic just as well as flashing them with a flame...something else to try...

Followup

Went back yesterday evening and did more testing to see how well the paint was sticking. The paint on the side of the test piece that was flashed could only be scratched off with a knife, and even then there was no flaking, just a normal scratch in the paint. The uflashed side, however, would flake off bad with just my finger nail. Keep in mind this was not even paint designed to stick to plastc. I'm sold!

Ray,

I'm using a propane torch (set as low as it will go) and yes moving fairly rapidly. When I finished, the piece was warm enough to be pliable, but not warm enough to loose it's shape. I would suggest "practicing" on a piece of scrap material to begin with.

Krylon Fusion Paint?

Why not use the Krylon Fusion Paint? Only problem is only 16 colors, but I have read folks using it with much success. I think I will try it next time around.

Cheers,

Because it's not available here in the UK and so I'm very interested. I think I need to practice a little and then give it a go.

I have been using a small butane torch. The flame is only about 1.5" long and the flame touches the surface at times. The plastic handles a lot more heat than one would expect, but its important to keep the flame moving. If you look at the plastic at an angle you can see its a little shiny. As you get the flame just right you will see it "blush" a bit. This is the point were you are doing it correctly. I ended up doing most of the canopy twice to make sure I didn't miss any spots. Once it is done you will notice you can move the flame over the surface and get no blush.

Why not Fusion? I have heard so-so things about fusion, plus I really wanted my blue pearl metallic paint!
