"U shaped collar on these johnson motors is used to increase the strength of the fixed magnets at their poles."

I didn't really think of that.
I'll try it and see if there's a big difference.

"Actually someone else did tests and found that the motor spins a bit slower with it"

The way I understand it, increasing the magnetic flux by adding a better flux ring will usually make the motor slow down, but will increase the torque.

I gave the other 3x2 prop that came with the kit to a friend. I will check with him - he may have another prop by now. I am pretty sure the motor is still a standard out of an ips drive - i have a spare. We can get it flying for Monday.
I bet the 10 tooth will help though. When I had the 12 on mine, the DD tail couldn't keep up at all on throttle bursts.

I just gave it a shot with the flux ring installed.

Noticibly less power. Had to give much left rudder trim to get hover to stay straight. This may be a good thing for Michael though. Until the tail motor is upgraded put the ring back on. I would still go to the 10 tooth pinion as well.

Would using a pinion with less teeth acually reduce the amp draw?

because, aside from the lost in tail authority, i notice that the battery(2s etec) got a bit warmer. Which can only mean that it was drawing more amps than the stock 370.

I have not regrete's with this motor cause if all else fails i can salvage the brushes from them, and at 50cents a pop there still worth it

P.s. the small motors mentioned earlier work great (can't tell a different in performance between the B2C)

From what I have read, the flux ring causes the torque to occur at a lower motor rpm, so you would need to go up a tooth or two on the pinion to get best results with the flux ring. If you are judging the tail authority by where you have to set the rudder trim, you are probably just seeing the results of the fixed mixer. Using the same pinion, if the motor has a lower Kv(rpm/volt) which it would with the flux ring, you would need a higher throttle setting to hover, so the fixed mixer would be running the tail faster, and would require left rudder trim. The johnson motor without the flux ring probably has a higher Kv than the stock motor, so will hover at a lower throttle setting, causing the mixer to apply less tail rotor, and you would need right rudder trim. In either case, changing the pinion so it hovers at the same throttle setting as stock would probably fix the rudder trim problem.

I've been running with an 11 tooth pinion on birdseeds with the metal jacket in tact. I was out in the snow with the Cubscouts all day so I haven't had a chance to try the 10 tooth pinion - I'll do that tomorrow.

Ok, I put on the 10 tooth pinion and all seems to be happy! Tail can hold its own again with the stock motor - and I left the jacket on, it makes a tighter fit with m heatsink.

So, Mark, I should be good to go at the indoor fly tomorrow evening.

Cool - it works!

Yes on flying tomorrow. I will be leaving my house around 5:45. I will be picking up both my nephews in Shrewsbury on the way up. Give me a ring on the cell anytime and I can tell you the entrance door that we use. I should be arriving there just a few minutes before 7PM. I believe a few people get there around 6:30 or earlier.

Aerohawk Motors

Can someone provide the specs on both motors for this heli

My tail motor seems to have died (1st day) - replacement is on the way, but am not impressed by all the posts I'm reading that suggest this is going to happen often

So am looking to source alternative/better spec motors

Thanks

go with the gws direct drive motor......I must admit it outperforms any other set up, and lasts a long time!
